New City Childcare Center Opens In San Francisco

The new facility for infants, toddlers and preschoolers is located in the Bayview District.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco city officials today celebrated the opening of a new childcare center in the Bayview District.

The FranDelJA Fairfax center at 901 B Fairfax Avenue will provide childcare for 70 infants, toddlers and preschoolers in the Hunters View public housing project.

FranDelJA, a nonprofit operated by sisters Gladys Harris and Sandra Young, already operates a center at 950 Gilman St. near the Alice Griffith public housing site.

The nonprofit was selected to operate the new $1.4 million child care center through a competitive request for proposals process, and will hold a long term low cost lease on the site in return for offering services to the surrounding community.

Acting Mayor London Breed and Supervisor Malia Cohen attended an event celebrating the center's opening.
"Every child should have a clean, safe and inviting place to learn, grow and play," Breed said. "This beautiful new facility - located where a dilapidated public housing site once stood - will bring the best services available to local children and families."
