San Francisco Mandates Employees Receive Fully Paid Family Leave

Lawmakers passed an ordinance Tuesday that requires businesses to provide new parents six weeks, fully paid time off.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- San Francisco became the first place in the nation to require that employers provide new parents up to six weeks fully-paid bonding time, according to NBC News.

NBC reports, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the measure Tuesday after supporters argued that paid leave is necessary because so many families cannot afford to take unpaid leave after a child is born or adopted.

California law currently allows workers to receive 55 percent of their wages for up to six weeks after birth or adoption, provided by a worker-funded state insurance program.

The measure will require San Francisco businesses with at least 20 employees to make up the remaining 45 percent unless the employer already provides benefits equal or greater to the ordinance, reported NBC News.
