'Vulnerable' Chick Hatches At San Francisco Zoo
This chick is the first of its species successfully hatched at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens. When it grows up, it will have a baby blue bill.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The San Francisco Zoo has introduced its newest chick.
The staff is thrilled with the baby bird's arrival. It's a South American Blue-throated Piping guan, Pipile cumanensis, and this is the first chick successfully hatched at the zoo.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the Blue-throated Piping guan is vulnerable, just one step below endangered.

The chick is being hand-raised by animal care staff. They don't know yet if it's a boy or girl.
As an adult, the bird will have black and greenish plumage and a blue throat, white facial skin and crest, and baby blue bill.

The chick’s parents live in the San Francisco Zoo’s South American Tropical Aviary if you'd like to pay them a visit.
