Bike to Work Day – San Bruno

San Bruno CA was the site of two “Bike to Work Day” Refresher Stations hosting bicyclists passing through the city. The purpose of this annual event is to encourage people to leave their cars and ride their bicycles to work. “Bike to Work Day” has many sponsors under the umbrella of Comute.org; “A public agency whose mission it is to reduce the number of drive alone vehicles traveling to, from or through San Mateo County. The goal is to help residents and commuters find alternatives to driving alone that are less stressful, less costly, and better on the environment. The agency provides information and commute planning assistance to employees, employer programs, and city transportation demand management partnerships.”

Thus “Bike to Work Day” is an effort to meet the agency’s goals.

Volunteer Coordinator, Bill Bright, facilitates all activities throughout San Mateo County and was especially helpful to our two stations here in San Bruno.

One “Refresher Station” was located at the Sam Bruno BART and was sponsored by long time supporter Walmart. The station was organized by Cecile Riborozo of Walmart and a member of the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC). Early morning set-up was done by three outstanding Walmart employees. Staffing at this site included Cecile, and her BPAC partners Walt Bird, Gus Sinks, and Henry Mar.

Cyclists who visited the Station were offered “Bike to Work Day” bicycle bags, tire repair kits, flyers promoting bicycle events, coffee, bananas, pastries, Clif bars, and literature from Comute.org.

San Bruno’s second Refresher Station was spotted at the east side of the Caltrain stop. The sponsor of this facility was YouTube who was participating for their second year. BPAC members staffing this site included Adam Cozzette (Vice Chairman), David Nigel (Chairman), and Marty Medina (San Bruno City Councilman).

More than 170 cyclists stopped-in at the Refresher Stations and more than 250 were passer-bys. These folks either had to get to their employment early or they had already stopped at other Refresher Stations throughout the County.

Darcy Smith, Community and Economic Development Director and Rucha Dande Associate Planner also dropped by the two Stations.

This was a very successful activity that was enjoyed by all.
