4-H Event Empowers Youth to Learn About Water Conservation

On April 28, 2012, San Mateo and San Francisco County 4-H will host the 4-H20 WOW (World of Water) Seminar at the San Mateo County Event Center, 1346 Saratoga Drive, in San Mateo. This free seminar will offer hands-on, experiential learning activities and models about water conservation and water quality, hydrology, and the effects of radiation on water.

Youth of all ages can participate in water-conservation activities—such as basic water-quality testing and enviroscape experiments—that can be completed at home, in school, after school, or even at a birthday party. Participants will also brainstorm local implementation strategies and practices that they can lead within their communities to improve local water quality and increase water conservation.

Through high-quality positive youth development programs like this, 4-H members are making the uncommon commitment to step up to challenges to implement community-wide change at an early age. In fact, a recent study from Tufts University finds that 4-H youth, when compared to their peers, are three times more likely to actively contribute to their communities.
