Contest Invites IB Students to Produce Short Films

The International Baccalaureate (IB), is asking students to develop a taste for Hollywood. The not-for-profit educational foundation is calling on aspiring film producers and asking them to communicate the fundamentals and message of ‘academic honesty within the IB’. Students are required to produce a short film, no longer than four minutes that captures and tells the story in both a creative and engaging manner.

Academic honesty within the IB is a set of principles derived from attributes of the learner profile that the organisation holds close to its heart. The aim is to raise awareness and understanding of academic honesty within the IB. Members of the IB community are encouraged to be ‘principled’; act with ‘integrity and honesty; and with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for an individual, groups or communities’. Students are encouraged to demonstrate academic honesty and avoid any form of academic misconduct.

In every examination session there are inevitably students who are investigated for ‘plagiarism’, ‘collusion’, ‘misconduct during an examination’ and other forms of academic misconduct including the duplication of work. Although not a widespread problem, a staggering 94% of IB candidates investigated for an alleged breach to the regulations can expect to see their grades affected.

“Unfortunately, students don’t always understand the stringent nature of our requirements and the benefits of following good academic practice, as students engaging in academic misconduct miss the opportunity to learn” said Celina Garza, manager of academic honesty at the IB.  “This competition will not only allow our gifted students to showcase their talents but we hope it will also raise awareness of the wider issues surrounding academic honesty and the simple steps that students can take to ensure they produce authentic pieces of work”.  

The competition is open to all first and second year students of the Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Certificate (IBCC) .

 Following the closing date in June 2013, a maximum shortlist of ten films will be selected by a team comprising of IB staff and an IB examiner. The winner of the competition will receive an award, a letter of recognition from the Director General of the IB (Jeffrey Beard), and an exclusive interview in IB World.
