Hello Bicycle Commuters and Supporters,
Caltrain is conducting a rider survey - fill it out and enter to win a $250 Visa gift card. The survey has some pointed questions about bikes on board including the following:
"Some people say Caltrain should allocate more space for bikes on board the trains, even if it leaves less space for riders, because allowing more bikes on the trains helps the environment and reduces traffic by taking more cars off the road.

Other people say that Caltrain should allocate more space for seats and standing room, even if it means bikes sometimes get bumped, because commute hour trains are already overcrowded and accommodating as many passengers as possible is the best way to help the environment and reduce traffic by taking cars off the road.
Please indicate where your opinion falls on the scale below. "
With 1 = "Caltrain should allocate more space for bikes" and 5 = "Caltrain should allocate more space for seats and standing room"
We're unhappy that Caltrain chose to frame the question this way, ignoring that Caltrain devotes a lot of land to parking lots and that driving to stations or using a transportation network company like Uber or Lyft harm the environment. But really Caltrain should stop pitting passengers against each other and serve the needs of all passengers.

Email Caltrain to Set the Record Straight about Bikes on Electric Trains
Caltrain staff has posted a presentation biased against bikes on electric trainsfor the March 7 board meeting. The focus is on maximizing seats and staff claims the 8:1 ratio of seats-to-bike spaces mandated by the board in 2015 doesn't apply anymore. Say what? Hey wait, that opens the door for more bike capacity beyond the 8:1 ratio!
Let's tell Caltrain what we really need! Click here to email the Caltrain Boardand copy all the right folks. Suggested talking points:
- Walk-on boardings continue to increase because walk-ons are allowed to stand when seats are full, but bike boardings have leveled off due to limited bike capacity
- Maxed out bike cars and bicycle bumps force people with bikes off the train and back into their cars, costing Caltrain over $3 million in lost ticket revenue in 2018 alone
- Ridership projections show that over 20% of passengers would bring bikes on board in 2022 if bike capacity were not limited
- If the 8:1 ratio of seats-to-bike spaces no longer applies as Caltrain staff claims, then let's go with a 5:1 ratio, or 132 bikes per seven-car train, to meet projected demand
- With significant improvements in wayside facilities including bike parking and bike share, however, we could compromise to 84 bikes per seven-car train, which would meet the 8:1 ratio mandated by the Board in 2015
