Park and Recreation Commissioner David Nigel represented the City of San Bruno at the Annual California Parks and Recreation Society 2019 Conference & Expo held in Sacramento. The CPRS Conference & Expo is one of the largest park & recreation conferences in the nation. One goal is to empower the more than 2,000 attendees in the top-notch education programs, network with park and recreation professionals and explore the second largest park & recreation expo hall in the U.S.
Commission Nigel was appointed to the City of San Bruno Parks and Recreation Commission, May 1970 and will be completing his 49th year of service in a little more than one month. He may be the longest serving P & R Commissioner in the United States.

In addition to his work in San Bruno related to recreation programs and touring our parks and playgrounds, he has worked on Scholarship Fundraising at the State level since 1979.
During the Commissioners and Board Members banquet, David presented two Scholarship recipients and introduced them both to those present at the Awards Dinner.

He was also very proud of the City of South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Commission as they were honored by the Association as “Commission of the Year” here in the State of California. All seven Commissioners, as was Mayor Karyl Matsumoto, and Recreation Director Sharon Ranals; Director Ranals was honored last year in Long Beach as “Director of the Year.” Past CAPRCBM President, Judy Bush, of South San Francisco was also in attendance.
David presented two Scholarship stipends the next morning during the California Foundation for Parks & Recreation, Scholarship Committee annual breakfast where the two wonderful young woman, a senior at San Diego State University, Regina Choy, majoring in Recreation Supervision received a check in the amount of $2,500 and another young woman, Ryan Nicole Morais, a graduate student at California Baptist University located in Riverside, majoring in Recreation Administration received $1,500. David sat with both women at the breakfast held at the Sacramento Hyatt Regency Hotel and was so very impressed with their aspirations, vision, and abilities!
During the hours of the Conference Exhibition Hall where 1,100 exhibitors featured their items, Commissioner Nigel conducted a raffle at the Commissioners’ booth that earn $505; this amount added to his letter writing campaign raised a total of $2,275 in Scholarship money for the Commissioners and Board Members Association for the next Conference to be held in Long Beach, March of 2020.
Commissioner Nigel takes great pride in representing the City of San Bruno; something that he has done since 1971. He wishes to continue working on the Scholarship project for the coming years.
