Caltrain's new bike-theft/bike-car layout

Hello Bicycle Commuters and Supporters,

Find out what's happening in San Brunofor free with the latest updates from Patch.

After huge public outcry about bike theft, Caltrain staff finally agreed to reconfigure electric trains. Or so they said. In fact, staff's proposed "new" bike-car layout is the same as the old layout – no fixed seats within view of 36 bikes. The only difference is the addition of four folding seats.

Caltrain staff proposes two bike cars per seven-car electric train. That's only 72 bike spaces per train, fewer than today's 77 bike spaces per train!

Make sure your voice is heard. Click here to email the Caltrain board and copy all the right folks. Suggested talking points:

  • Tell Caltrain why you bring your bike on board and how you feel about getting left behind on the platform due to insufficient bike capacity.
  • Ask the board to reject staff's proposed "new" bike-car layout because it will encourage bike theft and has fewer bike spaces than today.
  • Insist that the board keeps its promise of the 8:1 ratio of seats-to-bike-spaces, that is, 84 bike spaces per seven-car electric train AND have at least one seat within view of two bike spaces (same as today).
  • Explain that seats near bikes are important to prevent train delays caused by congestion from standees guarding their bikes.
  • Remind Caltrain of the many environmental, economic, and societal benefits of bikes on board.

Report All Bicycle Bumps

Please report all bicycle bumps using Caltrain’s bicycle bump report form, which automatically sends a tweet @CaltrainBikes. It is critical for Caltrain to hear about bicycle bumps, especially now!

Please forward this email to other bike riders and anyone who cares about bicycle commuting. Thank you for your continued support!

More bikes, no bumps,

Shirley Johnson
