Listeria Outbreak in 2017 Likely Linked to Caramel Apples
A recent MMWR Notes from the Field describes a 2017 outbreak of three Listeria monocytogenes infections that may have been linked to prepackaged caramel apples. In 2014–2015 a large multistate outbreak of Listeria infections was linked to caramel apples. The MMWR article identifies prevention strategies to consider to reduce or eliminate Listeria in ready-to-eat foods. Listeriosis causes serious illness and is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.
CDC Field Epidemiology Manual is Free and Online
CDC, through a partnership with the CDC Foundation and Oxford University Press, has published The CDC Field Epidemiology Manual. It is a definitive guide to investigating acute public health events on the ground and in real time. Written by experts from CDC and other leading public health agencies, the manual offers current and field-tested guidance for every stage of an outbreak investigation -- from identification to intervention and other core considerations along the way. Online access is free.

Mini Grants Available for Food Safety Programs
Apply by February 8 for a mini grant ($1,200 to $3,000) to support program initiatives to explore involvement in CDC's National Environmental Assessment Reporting System (NEARS). State, tribal, local, or territorial governmental food safety agencies not yet participating in NEARS may apply.
NEARS is a surveillance system that captures environmental assessment data from foodborne illness outbreak investigations in retail food services to improve food safety programs.
Media Training is Focus of Pre-Conference Workshop
