LIAO TAKES STATE WOMEN’S 200 METER LEAD & LOWERS PACESETTING 100 TIME AT DE ANZA TRACK OPEN; FOLAU LEADS MEN’S SP

Yan-Jun (Sophie) Liao added the state lead in the 200 meters and improved her pacesetting 100 meter time, winning both events for College of San Mateo at Saturday’s De Anza Open track & field. Meet.

Liao, a freshman exchange student from China, ran the 200 in 25.20 seconds and the 100 in 12.22, improving upon her previous season bests of 25.36 and 12.36. In addition to Liao’s win in the first second of the 100, the Bulldogs placed 1-2 in the second section with Anna Chuakay running 13.35 and Charisee Harper Jones 13.90 for overall placing points that helped CSM place fourth in the large women’s meet with 85 points. San Mateo also won both sections of the 200, with Jones running 28.44 in race two.

Taina Livai was the top college javelin thrower at 114 feet, 5 inches and placed second in the javelin throw at 121-6. The freshman currently ranks No. 4 in the state in both events. Teme Fanguna won the shot put for CSM at 35-9 1/4 (No. 11 in the state), with Livai placing third (33-11 1/2).

The Bulldogs also made their presence felt in the men’s throwing events. Elijah Folau had a state-leading shot put of 48-10 and placed second in the discus throw at 132-10 (No. 18 in the state). Quincy Daniels was second in the javelin throw at 147-9 (No. 12 in the state).

CSM placed third in the region-wide men’s competition, with 74 points, and fourth in the women’s meet, with 85 points. The 159 total points was good for third combined, behind De Anza and Modesto.

--San Mateo will host the CCCAA state championships, May 17-18.
