BULLDOGS ARE GOLDEN GATE BASEBALL CHAMPS – MISSION REMATCH THURS.
College of San Mateo clinched at least a tie for the Coast Golden Gate Conference baseball title and extended its winning streak to nine games with a 15-9 victory over host Mission College Tuesday afternoon. That gives the Bulldogs, 15-4, a one-game lead over the Saints (14-5) with just Thursday afternoon’s home finale – with Mission at 2:30 p.m. Both teams will advance to the region playoffs, May 3-4, but which team gets to host could be determined in Thursday’s contest.
NO-HIT KARALIUS WINS AGAIN ON A TUESDAY: Brett Karalius had his third straight winning Tuesday start for the Bulldogs, although his “perfect” starting E.R.A. was interrupted slightly by a pair of earned runs.
Justin Torres more than offset that with a five RBI hitting performance, including a home run and a double among his three hits. Danny Carnazzo, Christain Ontai, and Cole Gabrielson also had three hits apiece, with Carnazzo and Alec Ackerman each accounting for three RBIs. San Mateo outhit the Saints, 16-9 – and they have a state-leading .333 team batting average.
CSM is 26-11 and ranked 18th in the state. Ninth ranked Mission, at 27-9, has the RPI advantage over the Bulldogs so would likely be the conference No. 1 team for the playoffs – if they should tie for the title.
-- Karalius (3-0) threw the first no-hitter by a CSM pitcher in more than a quarter century in his first start, April 9. CSM pitchers pace the Golden Gate. The top four in E.R.A. are Nico Zeglin, 1.89; Sean Prozell, 2.29; Jamie Kruger, 2.74; and Karalius (who started the season as a reliever), 2.74. Kruger has the most wins (7) (followed by Prozell with six) and also leads in strikeouts with 67.
Carnazzo paces San Mateo regulars in batting at .368, followed by Gabrielson (.344) and Alec Ackerman (.342). The Bulldogs are hitting. 303 as a team (13th in the state) and slugging .461 (ranked No. 8). CSM has 30 home runs and 93 doubles, ranking No. 4 in the state in both categories.
ADDED NC GAME: CSM has also added a non-conference make-up game to its schedule and will host Monterey Peninsula College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
