SAN MATEO -- Alec Ackerman singled home pinch runner Oscar Murray in the eighth inning for the game’s first score as host College of San Mateo shutout previously undefeated Merced College, 2-0, in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon.
Starting pitcher Sean Prozell, playing designated hitter, singled to leadoff the decisive frame.
Murray ran for Prozell and advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Danny Carnazzo. Andrew Howard, who had been intentionally walked, later scored the game’s only other run after a flyout to right field by Justin Torres.
Prozell had pitched the first seven innings, scattering three hits and striking out five. He allowed just a single walk. Zach Button got the win, getting four strikeouts over the final two innings.
Ackerman and Christian Ontai each had a pair of hits. Ontai had the Bulldogs’ only extra base hit, a double.
Merced fell to 3-1-1.
