San Bruno Park School District is pleased to report positives results regarding student attendance as articulated in the recent release of the annual California Department of Education (CDE) report. The results provide validation of the District’s launch last year of its Attendance Matters! initiative being an effective approach to helping parents and students alike understand the importance of children being in school – that learning opportunities cannot be replaced when students miss class.

The results of the CDE report indicate that SBPSD rate of chronic absenteeism is below the average of county and statewide absenteeism. Of significance is the increase in attendance among English Language Learners, students with disabilities and students in foster care. Likewise, across all grade levels, absenteeism was reduced.

The District applauds teachers, parent liaisons, and principals who have worked diligently to support the Attendance Matters Initiative with their frequent messages to parents about the importance of attendance on children being successful and acknowledging students with activities and recognition incentives to support them in committing to being in class.

SBPSD schools display banners funded by San Bruno Education Foundation that “Attendance Matters Every Day In Every Way”. Students are recognized each trimester for most improved and best attendance. The District’s engagement with In Class Today, a research firm out of Harvard University, has been following chronic absenteeism with targeted messaging to parents, which is proving also to be an important tool in improving the District’s attendance data.

“The District’s mission and vision are centered on all students becoming successful and positive contributors to society; attending class is critical to them reaching their full potential”, commented Superintendent Dr. Stella Kemp. “These results from CDE clearly indicate that, when staff and parents work together on behalf of children, we can truly make a difference in their lives.”
