KARALIUS PERFECT 0.00 ERA IN HIS 2 WINNING STARTS; TORRES HAS GRAND SLAM

SAN MATEO – Brett Karalius got his second start and second win for College of San Mateo -- again not allowing an earned run -- as the Bulldogs maintained a first place tie in the Coast Golden Gate Conference baseball race with a 9-5 win over visiting Chabot College Tuesday afternoon. Justin Torres had a grand slam in the third inning for a 4-0 San Mateo lead.

CSM (23-11, 12-4 GG) had a 7-1 lead after seven innings when the San Mateo bullpen took over to hold on for the win. San Mateo’s win streak is now seven games, fourth longest in the state.

Karalius (2-0) had pitched the Bulldogs’ first no-hitter in more than a quarter century the preceding Tuesday, at De Anza. The righthander, out of Pacifica’s Terra Nova High had been used mainly in relief during his two seasons with the Bulldogs. His line against Chabot showed four hits, five strikeouts, and a single walk – plus an unearned run (on an error in the fourth inning, with CSM leading, 4-0, on Torres’ slam). (Including relief appearances, Karalius has a 3.09 season ERA.)

Torres also had a triple and scored twice. Christain Ontai had a double among his two hits.

-- San Mateo shares the league lead with Mission at 12-4 with four games remaining, including a concluding home-and-home series with the Saints: April 23 at Mission and April 25 at San Mateo.

Mission is fresh from a sweep of last place City College of San Francisco, which plays a pair of game with the Bulldogs this week CCSF, on Thursday and Saturday, the latter at San Mateo. Mission, which outlasted CCSF, 17-6, on Tuesday, plays De Anza in a pair later this week.
