SAN MATEO’S QBs SHARE 23 SUPER BOWL RINGS
Athletes who originally quarterbacked teams in San Mateo now share an amazing 23 Super Bowl rings.
Tom Brady (Serra High School) has six and Julian Edelman (College of San Mateo) has three after New England’s win in Super Bowl LIII. Add Lynn Swann, who played quarterback at Serra in 1969 before going onto a Hall of Fame career as a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has four. Swann, ironically, was the first receiver to be named MVP -- in Super Bowl X (1976). Edelman became the seventh this year (the first in a decade).
Brady often practiced on the CSM field (just a mile from Serra) with his personal mentor, the late Bulldogs coach Tom Martinez.
3 WHO QUARTERBACKED CSM HAVE A (PROBABLE) RECORD 13 RINGS:
Bill Walsh (3), Neal Dahlen (7) and Edelman (3), who all played quarterback at College of San Mateo, have a lucky total of 13 Super Bowl rings!
CSM lays claim to the “birthplace” of the West Coast Offense, where Walsh first played college football in the mid 1950’s.
Dahlen, an all-conference QB for CSM in 1959, held the record of most Super Bowl rings with seven until this year – in coaching roles with the 49ers and as General Manager of the Denver Broncos. He began his coaching career as an assistant at CSM. (Bill Belichick of the Patriots now has eight rings as a coach, including a pair as an assistant.)
CSM RESPONSIBLE FOR 19 RINGS! John Madden and Bill Walsh were the first former CSM players to win Super Bowl rings -- both as head coaches -- with the Raiders and the 49ers, respectively.
The other former CSM players and coaches to win rings: Neal Dahlen, Dick Vermeil, Steve Shafer, Bill Ring, Mike Solari – and Edelman.
EDELMAN MOST PROLIFIC NFL POST SEASON RECEIVER/RETURNER
Already the most prolific combination pass receiver and punt returner in NFL post season history, CSM’s Edelman added to his amazing post season game stats with his MVP outing in Super Bowl LIII.
The updated statistics:
--No. 2 in pass receptions with 115 in 18 games -- only the second player with more than 100.
Record is 151 by former 49er Jerry Rice in 29 games.
--No. 2 in pass receiving yards with 1,412 (18 games). He moved from No. 4 to No. 2 with 141 yards in Super Bowl LIII, surpassing Michael Irvin (1,315 for Dallas in 16 games) and Cliff Branch (1,289 for Oakland/L.A. Raiders in 22 games). Record is 2,245 yards by Jerry Rice in 29 games,
--No. 1 in punt returns, 39.
Former record: 34 returns by David Meggett, N.Y. Giants-New England-N.Y. Jets.
--No. 1 in yards returned, 443.
Former record: 339 yards, Brian Mitchell, Washington-Philadelphia.
Noteworthy: 79 of Edelman’s 115 receptions have resulted in first downs, including eight against the Rams in this year’s Super Bowl. The NFL does not list a record for first down receptions (although it does calculate that individually for players). He has completed one pass, resulting in a 51-yard touchdown, in 2014.
--Edelman, who also played quarterback locally at Woodside High School, missed the NFL 2017 season with an injury. Therefore, his totals could have been much higher. Edelman’s first postseason NFL game was in 2009, when he caught six passes for 44 yards and two touchdowns. He has five postseason TDs.
NFL Films called a difficult fourth quarter catch by Edelman in Super Bowl LI, which was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, “the greatest catch in Super Bowl history” in a YouTube video. That reception of a pass first tipped into the air by cornerback Robert Alford, keyed New England’s comeback from a 28-3 Atlanta lead to a 34-28 overtime victory for the Patriots.
HALL OF FAME CALLS EDELMAN? At least two CBS-TV broadcasters labeled Julian Edelman an NFL Hall of Fame player. After Super Bowl LIII, Nate Burleson said, “The biggest dog on the field was Tom Brady’s best friend.
Julian Edelman is no question a Hall of Famer. He sits behind Jerry Rice with 115 (post season) catches…He comes up in the biggest of moments. He is one of the most clutch wide receivers I have ever seen.”
Boomer Esiason also endorsed Edelman as ready for the Hall. “I make the argument he is because he always comes up big in the big spots.”
