Host Bulldog Women Place 6th, Lead Coast & 2nd Among NorCal Teams:
LIAO WINS STATE SPRINTS; LIVAI HAS STATE’S TOP JAVELIN THROW FOR CSM

SAN MATEO – Host College of San Mateo crowned three women state champions and finished sixth at the California Community College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at College Heights Stadium.

Freshman Yan-Jun (Sophie) Liao was the women’s sprint star in the rain on Saturday. She blasted out of the starting blocks to take a decisive victory in the 100 meters in a state season best 11.65 (with a legal 1.2 meters per second aiding wind). The Chinese Taipei native flew off the curve to win the 200 going away in 24.64, although hampered by a 1.5 mps headwind.

Challenger Kierra King of Cerritos, who came in as the favorite with some strongly wind-aided marks, was a distant second in both races – with respective times of 11.91 and 25.10.

Liao has a wind-legal season best in the 200 of 24.41, set in winning the Coast Conference championship, which ranks No. 2 in the state to King’s 24.15 legal best time.

Liao finished the day with a 59.1 second leg on CSM’s 4 x 400 meter relay team, which placed ninth. That quartet included Yashvee Patel, Charisse Harper-Jones, and Anna Chuakay.

--The San Mateo women scored 34 points, highest for a Coast Conference team and just behind fifth place Sacramento (47). Cerritos College of Norwalk won the team title with 111 points. Coast Conference and NorCal champion Hartnell placed 16th among the 39 scoring colleges.

LIVAI JAVELIN WINNER & STATE LEADER:
The Lady Bulldogs also had an impressive field event winner on Friday, Taina Livai, with a state-leading javelin throw of 134 feet, 2 inches. She is the only California Community College athlete to surpass 40 meters this season. And she did it twice on Friday.

The sophomore out of Mills High School (Millbrae) extended her state lead to 40.81 meters (133 feet, 10 inches) on her first effort to take control. She stretched that to 40.90 (134-2) on her third effort – which ranks No. 2 nationally among all community college throwers. Silver medalist Hannah Katches of Cuesta was more than six feet back at an even 128 feet.

Livai was also a finalist in the women’s shot put on Saturday, where she finished 12th at 34-10 1/4.
Freshman Teme Fanguna was the top CSM scorer there, finishing fifth at 38-4 3/4. Fanguna placed 12th in the discus at 83-11, finding it difficult to connect in the very wet throwing circle. The Mercy (Burlingame) grad ranks eighth in the state season with a best of 129-6.

Coast Conference men’s shot put champion Elijah Folau managed to get into the top nine with a 45-11 1/4 effort on his third put, following a pair of fouls. But the freshman from Serra High could not improve on his final three efforts in the rain. San Mateo’s highest male scorer was freshman Quincy Daniels (Serra) in the javelin throw, placing sixth at 170-1 on Friday.

--Riverside City College won the men’s competition with 116 points, ahead of defending champ Mt. San Antonio (73). This was the fifth time since 2007 that CSM has hosted the state meet on its Mondo track facility.

RIVERSIDE MEN & CERRITOS WOMEN WIN 2019 CCCAA TRACK & FIELD TITLES

SAN MATEO -- Antonio Mitchell swept the sprint races and led off the winning 4 x 100 meter relay as Riverside City College rolled up 116 points and outscored defending champion Mt. San Antonio in the 2019 California Community College Athletic Association men’s track and field championships Saturday at College of San Mateo.

Cerritos College moved back to the top in the women’s title hunt with 111 points, replacing Mt. SAC as winners. The Falcons had won three straight titles, 2015-17, before losing to the Mounties last year.

MEN’S SPRINTS:
Mitchell repeated as 100 meter champion in 10.21 seconds, an event in which he ranks No. 2 nationally among all community college sprinters. He also won the 200 meters in 21.16 and helped the Tigers win the 4 x 100 meter relay in 40.71. He contributed a leg on Riverside’s 4 x 400 meter relay team, which finished second in 3:15.25 to American River. The Beavers got a great anchor leg from Myles Ellis to win in 3:14.03.

Daniel Stokes of Cerritos won the 400 meters in 46.60, beating Ellis (runner-up in 46.82). Stokes had a good day, running second in the 200 meters (21.39) and leading off the Cerritos 4 x 100 relay, which also took silver (40.84). That relay was anchored by Kendall Turner, the 100 meter silver medalist (10.50).

WOMEN’S SPRINTS:
Host San Mateo produced an impressive double sprint champion in Yan-Jun (Sophie) Liao. The freshman, a Chinese Taipei native, was a decisive winner in the 100 meters in a state season best 11.65 (and legal 1.2 meters per second aiding wind). She won the 200 in 24.64, hampered by a 1.5 mps headwind.
Challenger Kierra King of Cerritos settled for the silver medal in both races, with times of 11.91 and 25.10.

Sacramento City College sophomore Daryia Greene took the 400 meters in 56.04 and anchored the Panthers’ silver medal winning 4 x 400 meter relay (3:54.55). Riverside took the concluding relay in 3:53.83. Cerritos, with King and Kenyla Miles contributing key legs, won the 4 x 100 relay (46.63) and took bronze in the 4 x 400.

HURDLES: College of the Sequoias sophomore Jamal Britt swept both men’s hurdle races, the 110 in 14.08 and the 400 meters in 52.13. He was a triple individual winner, having taken the long jump on Friday. He also ran a leg on the Giants fifth placed 4 x 400 meter relay team.

Tajanique Bell of Southwestern took the women’s 100 meter hurdles in 14.02 and was second in the 400 hurdles in 62.66, won by Alia Scott of Cerritos (60.66). Scott was also third in the 100 hurdles.

DISTANCES: Brenda Rosales-Coria was Saturday’s top distance performer, taking a trio of titles. She repeated as champion in both the 1,500 meters (4:48.49) and 5,000 meters (17:33.53). This year she added the 800 meter crown – in 2:11.74 (just missing the national season leading mark of 2:11.71). Rosales-Coria is already No. 1 in the 1,500 (4:30,76) and No. 2 in the 5K (17:14.96). Haven Lambrite of American River won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11.22.09.

The men’s distance winners were spread out. Reece Proctor of Chabot took the 800 meters in 1:50.64, using a strong finishing sprint to holdoff Mohamed Mohammed of Riverside (1:53.78). Chris Weiland of Mt. San Antonio, already the national leader in the 1,500 meters, won that event in 3:56.07 -- ahead of Carson Bix of East Los Angeles (3:58.29).

The 5,000 meters featured an entertaining duel over the last three laps. Stefen Rasmuson of San Diego Mesa eventually sprinted home in 15:08.73, ahead of adversary Salvador Capetillo of Mt. SAC (15:13.72) – the repeat 10,000 meter winner. Weiland took the bronze medal in 15:18.49.

Ariel Conde of West Los Angeles won the men’s steeplechase race in 9:22.16, ahead of state season leader Colby Penn of Mt. SAC (9:29.21).

SATURDAY WOMEN’S FIELD EVENTS:
Cerritos got a 1-2 performance in the triple jump with Justice Smith winning at 40 feet, 4 1/4 inches and Imani Jones taking second (19-5). Both athletes achieved their top marks on their final jumps. Jones had won the long jump on Friday.
Angelique Hudson of Riverside won the shot put at 45-9 3/4, a state season best. Riley Cannon of Sacramento was the runner-up at 41-10 3/4.
Emily March of Diablo Valley hurled the discus 148-1 to defeat state season leader Melissa Favorite of De Anza, who threw 132-4. Cannon placed third (125-11).

Trey Pierce of Diablo Valley was the men’s triple jump winner at 47-9, over Juwan Searles of San Joaquin Delta, 47-0 3/4.
State leader Brenden Coffey of Butte put the shot 50-4 1/2 on his second effort to win that event ahead of Jordan Palmer of Canyons (49-10 1/2).
Dominique Navarre of College of the Siskiyous threw the discus 166-4, just five inches off his state leading mark, to take that event. Alec Jones of Riverside was second at 161-6.

COMBINED EVENTS:
Hanah Smrt of Yuba College scored 4,477 points to win the women’s heptathlon by more than a 500-point margin over Charlotte Kraushaar of Orange Coast (3,934). Smrt moved up to No. 3 in the national season rankings. In addition to the seven heptathlon events, Smrt competed in three more events, taking third in the high jump, fourth in the long jump, and sixth in the 100 meter hurdles.

The men’s decathlon was decided in the tenth and final event, the 1,500 meters. Brett Lombardi of American River trailed Dylan Bouzigues of De Anza by 21 points after nine events. Lombardi won the 1,500 in 4:29.73 for 746 points. Bouzigues received 502 points for his 5:10.36 time. Lombardi took the gold medal with 6,343 points and Bouzigues was the runner-up at 6,120.

--It rained throughout most of Saturday afternoon’s competition, the fifth wettest May 18th in San Francisco Bay Area history. This was the fifth time since 2007 that San Mateo has conducted the CCCAA championships on its Mondo track facility.
