CSM COMEBACK IN HOME FINALE FALLS SHORT IN FINAL 15 SECONDS AGAINST SJCC
SAN MATEO -- It came down to the final 15 seconds with a 1-point margin in Saturday’s College of San Mateo women’s basketball home finale. Kaitlyn Tamondong’s steal and lay-up for the Bulldogs closed it to 60-59 in favor of visiting San Jose City College with 14.6 seconds showing on the game clock.
But the Bulldogs would have trouble getting the ball back having been called for only two fouls in the final quarter and they did not score again as San Jose took a 62-59 victory. CSM internationally fouled SJCC three times (including losing season scoring leader Kyana Wiley with five fouls) before the Jaguars finally headed to the line with 10.4 seconds left. Top Jags free throw shooter Yvonne Delgado netted both charity attempts for the final margin. Tamondong was unable to get off a good 3-point attempt for the tie.
Freshman center Victoria Mataele had her highest scoring total in a Coast North Conference game, 16 points (including three key baskets in the final quarter) to lead CSM. Tamondong had 12 points, eight assists, and two steals. Guard Ava Agustin also had 12 points, plus five steals and two assists.
The game had six ties and 11 lead changes. CSM had two major comebacks. Trailing 29-20 with 1:44 left in the first half, the Bulldogs embarked on an 11-point run to take the lead at 31-29 two minutes into the third quarter. But Wiley then picked up her fourth foul and played only sparingly after that.
After leading, 35-33, with 5:09 left in the third quarter, CSM did not sink another field goal for six minutes. San Jose used 3-point shooting to hold an 11-point lead at 54-43 with 6:37 left in the game. Agustin and Mataele led a 12-2 San Mateo run to close to within a point at 56-55 with 2:34 left. The Bulldogs, however, were unable to regain the lead again.
--San Jose (5-5) moved a half game ahead of CSM (5-6) in Coast North play and into fourth place. Both teams are 10-13 overall. The Bulldogs closes at second place Chabot (8-2) on Friday at 5 p.m. CSM beat the Gladiators, 66-61, at San Mateo in the first round.

CSM BASEBALL SHACKLES VISITING FEATHER RIVER, 11-6
SAN MATEO -- Christian Ontai had three hits and scored twice as College of San Mateo defeated visiting Feather River College, 11-6, in a non-conference baseball game Saturday afternoon. Danny Carnazzo, Christian Stapleton, Justin Torres, and Andrew Howard each added a pair of hits to the Bulldogs’ 15-hit outburst. Both of Stapleton’s hits were doubles.
Ontai scored the go ahead run in the eighth inning on an error by Feather River third baseman Ty Brogden with the bases loaded, breaking a 4-4 tie. Howard’s 2-RBI hit later scored Alec Ackerman and Anthony Flores to give the Bulldogs their eventual winning margin at 9-4. JJ Ota and Ontai each doubled home runs to make it 11-4 after eight innings. Feather River scored twice in the ninth before CSM reliever Carlo Lopiccolo ended it with a strikeout.
Nick Von, who started the eighth inning on the mound, was the winning pitcher to get his first decision.
CSM improved its record to 7-3. Feather River dropped to 9-3.
In a schedule reversal, San Mateo plans to host College of Marin on Tuesday and then again on Thursday, both at 2 p.m.
