EL CRYSTAL SITE UNDER CONTRACT TO BE SOLD
SAN BRUNO, CA. December 13, 2018. At the December 12th meeting of the San Bruno Park School District Board of Trustees, the Board ratified the election results from the County confirming the passage of Measure X with a resounding 69% voter approval. The $79 million bond will enable the District to continue with implementation of its vision for Schools with Tomorrow Inside.
To leverage the bond dollars dedicated to the modernization program, the District also took action at the meeting to enter into contract with Stratford School to purchase the District’s surplus property, which was the former El Crystal school site, at a sale price of $13.5 million. A number of proposals were received expressing interest in purchasing the property. None were submitted from a city or agency in San Mateo County.

Stratford School, a tuition-based private school with campuses throughout California, is in a long-term lease with San Bruno Park School District, using the former Crestmoor Elementary School site for its preschool through 5th grade program. The school enrolls students from as far north as San Francisco, south to San Carlos. The El Crystal site will become home to Stratford’s pre-school through kindergarten program, serving 3-6 year-old children.
Stratford plans to upgrade the existing campus. They are not planning to do any demolition of the existing buildings. Stratford School will now apply to the City of San Bruno for a required Conditional Use Permit before it can begin operations.

“Stratford School looks forward to meeting with the El Crystal neighborhood in the first few months of 2019 to discuss details about the planned use of the existing site”, commented Dr. Stella Kemp, Superintendent. “The school has a strong philosophy and positive reputation for maintaining an attractive property and being sensitive to the needs of the neighborhood in which the private school resides”, she continued.
“In making our decision, the Board considered a number of factors in reviewing proposals that were submitted to purchase the site, including minimal disruption to the El Crystal neighborhood”, commented Kevin Martinez, newly elected Board President. “Given Stratford School’s reputation for being a good neighbor in the community, and its tuition based program, it will not have a negative impact on our public school system here in San Bruno, the Board believes this decision is a win-win for all concerned”, he concluded.
In the coming weeks, Dr. Kemp will be sending a letter to the El Crystal neighborhood advising of the sale of the El Crystal site and that Stratford School will be in touch with details of the neighborhood meeting after the first of the year.
