Google Works with San Bruno Park School District and Mayor Rico Medina to Host Computer Science Event for San Bruno, CA Youth

Google’s program teaches kids about the importance of STEM education with a hands-on coding activity.

During October, Google and Mayor Rico Medina paid a visit to Allen Elementary School to deliver the CS First Roadshow, a computer science education presentation developed by Google for 4th - 8th grade school students. Earlier in the month, the CS First Roadshow was at Belle Air.

Two Google employees delivered the hour-long presentation, which focuses on teaching students both problem solving and technical coding skills through a series of interactive activities. They encouraged kids to develop an interest in computer science education by giving real-life examples of how coding and STEM education can lead to educational opportunities and exciting careers.

Mayor Rico Medina participated in today’s presentation at Allen Elementary School. He kicked off the presentation by expressing the importance of learning about computer science at an early age,and helped kids build their own fun stories using Scratch, an introductory coding tool.

"We appreciate Google & YouTube for hosting these coding events in our public schools." "Showing kids the magic of coding is critical to their success and demonstrates that with the right training and tools, they can do anything"

"Kids are exposed to technology at such an early age, but don’t necessarily get to learn about why computer science should be an important part of their lives - both now and in the future," said Alex Sanchez, a Google spokesperson. "We want the next generation of students to be able to create technology, not just consume it."

In recent years, San Bruno Park School District has championed Computer Science programming in classrooms across schools.

“The vision San Bruno Park School District has for the children entrusted to our care is to support them to become productive critical thinkers who embrace diversity, curiosity and innovation", commented District Superintendent Dr. Stella Kemp. “The District is committed to ensuring that our schools are the teaching and learning centers that prepare students for the workplace of the future. Half a million computer science jobs go unfilled because of lack of training. We are fortunate in San Bruno to have Google/YouTube as partners who bring computer science experiences to our students. Last year, Google brought CS first to Parkside Intermediate School. This year Belle Air and Allen students are getting to experience this program with the support of Google volunteers,” she continued.

The CS First Roadshow teaches students about the importance of STEM education and uses interactive activities to teach them coding basics. The goal of the presentation is to encourage students to develop an interest in computer science education and grow both their problem solving and technical coding skills. This roadshow is part of Grow with Google, a new initiative to provide Americans of all ages with the skills they need to prepare for work, find a job or grow their business.
