It's apparent what a lot of San Bruno residence are doing – getting rid of old furniture, appliances and other junk, and leaving it on the street and the sidewalks. According to a new report, the problem of trash on the streets has gotten so bad, it's threatening the San Bruno brand and quality of life, and San Bruno officials are fielding a growing number of calls and reports from the public about trash in the streets. Are things really as bad as they sound?
Some people litter as a way of marking their territory, it's a psychological thing. Others do it because it is one of the most difficult crimes to solve and punish and the feel like they are getting away with something. If you really want to stop littering, video tape them littering and turn it over to law enforcement. When the word gets out that they are handing out $100 fines first time by the truck load people may stop.
Instead of having the code enforcement handle this we need to have the police look at the address from where the garbage has come from and hand out a fine of $100 for first time offense and graduate to $1000. The business owners also need to be aware of issues around them and try to take care of it. Would you go to a place of business where the property is not well kept and or falling apart. Remember this, "There's something systemic that has occurred in the city of San Bruno that didn't happen overnight, "It's happened over time."
