ANOTHER 9TH INNING PLAYOFF COMEBACK FOR CSM BASEBALL

Anthony Flores and Christian Ontai singled home ninth inning runs as College of San Mateo scored a 3-2 comeback victory at Sacramento City College Thursday in the first game of a Super Regional state baseball playoff series.

--The No. 7 seeded Bulldogs (31-12) can clinch the best of three series Friday at 3 p.m. A third game would be played on Saturday at 1 p.m. – all at No. 4 Sacramento (30-12).

CSM took the initial 1-0 lead Thursday on a sacrifice fly to right by Christian Ontai, scoring Flores (who had reached on a single).

Sacramento rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth on a 2-out, 2-RBI single by Daniel Walsh. A lead-off double by Dan Sayre and a hit batter (Anthony Galati) provided the Panthers with the opportunity. CSM starting pitcher Sean Prozell had allowed only one hit over the first five frames. He finished with four strikeouts over six innings, allowing three hits. Nico Zeglin pitched the final three scoreless innings for the win, improving his record to 6-3.

Alec Ackerman ledoff the top of the ninth for the Bulldogs with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Sperling. Flores drove a single to left field, bringing Ackerman home with the game tying run. Daniel Haberern drew a walk, putting Flores in scoring position. Ontai’s single to right scored Haberern with what proved to be the winning run.

--The Bulldogs had reached the Super Regionals with a 4-run ninth inning rally the previous Saturday to eliminate Sierra College, 11-10, in the first of three state regional rounds. Sperling had the walkoff RBI single to end that series. Super Regional winners advance to next week’s Sectional Finals.
