LIAO SWITCHES TO 400 ON WET DAY AND WINS WITH STATE RANKING TIME FOR CSM

Yan-Jun (Sophie) Liao ran her first 400 meter race in three years and breezed to an easy win in 59.74 seconds at College of San Mateo’s Mini Open meet Friday afternoon. That time ranks the CSM freshman from Foster City No. 15 in the state, complimenting her leading/No. 1 legal 100 meter time of 11.92 and her slightly wind-aided 200 time of 24.72 (which is No. 4 for all conditions).

She also won the 200 in 25.73 Friday by more than a second, over City College of San Francisco’s Lauren George.

Although the rain subsided as the meet was getting underway, it was a cool and slightly damp day, which hindered performances. CSM athletes still won several events while failing to improve their season bests.

Taina Livai won the women’s javelin throw at 102 feet, 6 inches and was second in the shot put at 33-8 3/4, won by teammate Teme Fanguna at 33-11 1/4. Fanguna also took the discus throw at 119-1, with Livai second (104-9).

Elijah Folau won the men’s shot put at 47-11 (a bit off his No. 2 state mark of 49-11 set the previous week at Stanford). He also won the discus throw at 123-1. Quincy Daniels took the men’s javelin throw at 153-9.

On the track, Jafar Bucknal won the men’s 400 meter hurdles in 58.32 and led off the Bulldogs’ winning 4 x 400 meter relay team.
