State 100 meter leader Yan-Jun (Sophie) Liao, the reigning national champion for Chinese Taipei, made an auspicious home debut for the Bulldogs, sweeping the sprints by wide margins. She won the 100 meters in 12.08 seconds -- slightly off her state-leading wind-legal time of 11.92 -- and took the 200 meters in a season best 24.72. She won the latter race by more than a second over Taje Pete of Diablo Valley (25.78). Although slightly “wind-aided” by a 2.2 meters per second wind, that 200 mark is the fastest time run inside California by a community college athlete this season. (Three Cerritos College runners used near gale-force winds to post slightly faster times, however, at a meet in Las Vegas earlier this month.)

SOPHIE KEYS RELAYS FOR RANKING: Liao also anchored a pair of CSM relay teams to second place finishes with state-ranking times, 50.90 in the 4 x 100 meters (No. 5 in NorCal, No. 13 in state), and 4:20.06 in the 4 x 400 meters (No. 8 and 17, respectively). She anchored the latter with a 60.6 split.

Running the middle legs on that 4 x 4 team were Yashvee Patel and Charisse Harper Jones, who had earlier placed 1-2 in their section of the open 400 meters. Anna Chuakay ran the leadoff leg. The same quartet ran on the 4x1, with Jones leading off.

The San Mateo men’s 4 x 400 relay placed third with a season best 3:33.07 clocking. That team included Bruno Brasileiro, who earlier won his heat of the 400 meters in 52.10, and Jafar Bucknal, who had placed third overall in the 400 meter hurdles in 58.93.

San Mateo had the top community college performance in the men’s javelin with Quincy Daniels reaching 146-2. Elijah Folau saw his state men’s shot put lead of 49-5 eclipsed by Darell Kaanaana of Yuba at 50-10 3/4. Folau placed second at 49-4 1/4 and now ranks second in California.

--Liao has qualified for the 100 meters at Friday’s (March 29) Stanford Invitational.

CSM will host the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships, May 17-18.

Bulldogs Outscore March Foes 140-6

CSM SOFTBALL STREAK AT 19 AFTER DH SWEEP AT MERCED

MERCED – Amanda Ubois-Weitenhagen had four hits and four RBIs as College of San Mateo increased the state’s best softball record to 26-2 with a doubleheader sweep over host Merced College, 6-0 and 5-1, on Sunday. CSM has outscored opponents in March by a 140-6 margin while extending the state’s longest winning streak to 19 games.

Pitcher Emily McAdams (16-1) scattered four hits and had eight strikeouts in the complete game shutout opener. McAdams aided her cause with a hit, a run, and a sacrifice. She took the state lead in wins with 16 and ranks No. 3 in earned run average (0.65) and No. 4 in strikeouts (110) among the state’s 86 teams.

Brittany Prock (7-1) also had a complete game in the nightcap, while hitting a 2-RBI double in the first inning that gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead and the eventual winning run. Aubrie Businger had ledoff with her fourth home run of the season. San Mateo leads the state with 24 homers.

Ally Sarabia had a RBI double in the first game and a pair of hits in the second, also scoring a run. Kaylyn Sterling and Riley Donovan each had two hits in the first game. Kaitlyn Grech had two RBIs and leads the team with 34 (No. 2 in the conference). Ubois-Weitenhagen increased her team-leading batting average to .492.

Merced (10-12) is a contender in the Central Valley Conference at 4-2 (one game out in the loss column).
