On November 6, 2018, San Bruno Park School District successfully passed the Measure X $79 million facilities bond with overwhelming approval from the voters. The District has moved expeditiously to put in place a team of experts to begin the modernization design, bidding and construction of District schools, including a formal “Request for Proposal” process to solicit architectural and construction management services.

Consequent to District review of proposals submitted and interviews, on April 24th, the Board of Trustees authorized the District to enter into contract negotiations with Hibser Yamuchi Architects for design of the new Allen Elementary School campus, a major step forward for the District’s vision create 21st Century centers for teaching and learning.

Hibser Yamuchi Architects has been providing planning and design services to K-12 districts throughout California for the past thirty years. The firm has extensive experience not only in new construction and modernization, but also in site master planning and facilities assessments. Recently, HY Architects completed a facilities assessment for SBPSD and the Schools with Tomorrow Inside visioning study making them very familiar with San Bruno schools and the community. The firm is committed to design that facilitates academic as well as social success. The architectural team assembled for SBPSD Measure X projects is Marcus Hibser (USC), Lee Pollard (Cal Poly), Nina Idzerda (Cal Poly), Ernie Paleo (California College of the Arts) and Tim Steele (Yale & Oberlin).

Hibser Yamuchi Architects is one of the firms in a pool of architects approved earlier in the month by the Board of Trustees to assist the District with design of Measure X bond projects. The other two firms are Artik and Dreiling Terrones Arcitecture (DTA).

With the District construction management (Greystone West) and architect team now in place, the next steps for the Measure X Bond Program will be two-fold: a) convene a design committee for rebuilding a new Allen Elementary School (with representation on the committee from the school, district, community) and b) conduct a needs analysis for a new year five-year deferred maintenance plan that will lay the groundwork for budgeting Measure X projects with current income derived from Measure X and sale of surplus property.
