Bicycle Rodeo in Millbrae
Taylor Middle School was the site of an impressive Bicycle Rodeo free event featuring the sharpening of bike safety skills, riding on the extensive, lengthy, and challenging Bicycle Course, food, and music were just a few of the myriad of attractions.

Folks of all ages and skill levels were welcomed and actively participated in a variety of activities.
Free bicycle helmets were issued to any youngster that wanted one, as this was one of the many highlights of the day’s activities. Lots of good family fun was the emphasis of this community event.

A strong presence of San Mateo County Sheriffs’ Deputies, participation by the California Highway Patrol, Millbrae’s Central County Firemen, Millbrae Lions’ Club, Disaster Preparedness Committee, and many other agencies were in attendance and actively participating. Among these groups were the Millbrae Leos Club whose members were involved in the set-up, face painting, sidewalk chalk art, coloring and safety activities.
San Mateo’s Sheriffs Activity League (SAL) ran a spectacular and very popular safety course. The group also provided popcorn, face painting and operated the very exciting bounce house.

The Bay Area Bike Mobile Group was also participating as they promoted their goals to improve the way people “Move” by educating and encouraging how to effectively walk, bike, and take public transit to create healthier communities.
Our California Highway Patrol handed out over 330 bicycle helmets and made sure all were fitted correctly; these helmets were of no cost to the recipients.
Also involved was the Millbrae School District.
Another activity was the “Best of Show Safety Poster Contest” that involved school children. Winning posters and many others will be displayed at City Hall.
City of Millbrae’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee exhibited plans for all their new bike routes coming to the City.
The Disaster team, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) explained their goals and mission at their information booth.
Millbrae Councilwoman Ann Schneider and her organizing committee did a remarkable job in facilitating this event attended by more than 600 youngsters and adults. Councilwoman Schneider stated that the participation of a Disc Jockey (DJ) truly added to the enthusiasm of all the activities.
Special and exciting appearance by “Milly” the Red Legged Frog … the City’s new mascot was a thrill for the children as well as the adults.
To add to the excitement, a raffle was held giving away five bicycles. Winners of the raffle will be invited to attend a future meeting of the City Council.
This four-hour event was truly successful in terms of community-building and outreach.
