National

The Annual Conference of the American Mosquito Control Association will be in Orlando, Florida. February 25 to March 1, 2019. Board Vice President Wade Leschyn will be attending with Assistant Manager Brian Weber and Laboratory Director Angie Nakano.

  • Mosquito & Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC)
  • Vector Control Joint Powers Association Workshop in Santa Cruz. The VCJPA will hold its annual workshop to review insurance programs in March. The VCJPA is a self-insurance group formed by vector control agencies. This workshop provides an opportunity to review the status of insurance programs. This year District Manager Chindi Peavey will attend with Finance Director Richard Arrow.
  • March 26, 2019 Sacramento
  • April 2, 2019 San Diego
  • July 7, 2019 Napa
  • ALL NEW BOARD MEMBERS who were first appointed to the Board after November 7, 2015 are required to complete this workshop.
  • MVCAC Annual Conference was held in Burlingame February 3-6 2019. Fourteen Trustees attended the conference along with most of the District staff. Staff discussed what they had learned at the conference in a staff meeting on Thursday February 7. Staff enjoyed the opportunity to interact with other districts and learn about innovative techniques and equipment. All agreed it was a valuable learning experience.

District

  • The quarterly meeting of the local San Mateo County Chapter of the California Special Districts Association will be held at the District headquarters on February 12, 2019 at 7:30 PM.
  • There is also a meeting of the Special District Selection Committee on February 12, 2019 to elect the Special District Representative to the Local Agency Formation Commission for San Mateo County (LAFCO). Board President Joe Galligan will attend and vote.
  • The Regional meeting of the MVCAC Coastal Region District Managers was held on February 1 at the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District office in Hayward. District Manager Chindi Peavey attended.
  • Governance Foundations Workshop and the District of Distinction Certificate. Any Board member who was unable to attend the training will need to complete it as soon as possible. The next opportunity will be to attend one of the following:
  • Update on the Salary Survey. The survey is complete and available to the Board.
  • Government Finance Officers Association. Finance Director Richard Arrow is attending the Annual Conference of the Government Finance Directors this week. The conference provides an opportunity to keep current with the latest information in government finance and network with other public agency finance officers.
  • Staff visits to Southern California Districts. We are sending 5 members of the District staff, including people from both Operations and the Laboratory to visit some of the vector control districts in Southern California and exchange information. They will visit the laboratories of Greater Los Angeles MVCD, Orange County MVCD and San Gabriel Valley MVCD. They will talk to staff tour the laboratory, shop and garage at each site and then accompany field staff in their day-to-day work. The purpose of the trip is to exchange ideas on how to deal with Aedes aegypti and other invasive mosquitoes, experience firsthand how different district are conducting surveillance and control, network with their peers and stimulate new ideas in vector control. It will be a valuable learning experience for the staff and an opportunity to showcase what our district does at the same time.
