Portola School Evacuated After Gas Leak Scare

Students were taken to Parkside Intermediate School while the school was being investigated.

UPDATE: 3:25pm: Classes will resume Friday at Portola Elementary following today's evacuation after someone reported a possible gas leak, according to the school district's website.

The school district also said the open house that was supposed to take place today at Portola has been postponed.

Students and staff at Portola Elementary School, which is about a mile from the site of last week's gas explosion and fire, were evacuated this morning after a report of a gas leak, officials said.

According to media reports, the fire department later said there wasn't a gas leak but that the source of the smell came from the school's heater.

Students were taken to Parkside Intermediate School, where parents were asked to pick up their children.

The school has been closed for the day, while PG&E investigates, according to the school district.
