Research has shown that music education helps children develop motor skills, spurs their creativity and helps improve test scores. Sadly, music programs were cut from curriculums all across the State. With San Bruno schools struggling with ongoing budget shortfalls, music programs were barely scraping by.
Last year, The Capuchino Alumni Association and the San Bruno Education Foundation came together to develop a program to support music education. Working with staff and administrators at the San Bruno Park School District and Capuchino High School, they developed a concept to enhance the music programs. Together they applied for a grand from the San Bruno Community Foundation and were awarded a significant grant in 2017. The grant was divided among all the schools and the results so far have been amazing.
While this funding breathed new life into San Bruno’s music education programs, the work is not over. The grant from the Community Foundation was critical in kick starting the programs but going forward they will need the community’s support. The “Music in the Air” program on November 3rd showcased the impact the program has had on our young musicians. We hope that the spirit and the excitement of that evening continues and inspires all of us to support these important programs.
