“This is a major victory for San Bruno on many levels”, commented Dr. Stella Kemp, San Bruno Park School District Superintendent. “Good schools equate to a stronger community that attracts new families and businesses”, she continued. “I, along with the countless endorsers, donors and amazing volunteers who supported Measure X, are deeply grateful to the community for responding so favorably to the bond measure to fix our schools”.

Parents Wendy al-Mukdad and Kathy Cannon, co-chairs of the Committee to Improve San Bruno Schools that spearheaded the Measure X campaign collectively shared their enthusiasm: “This was an extraordinary grassroots volunteer campaign with support coming from all sectors: seniors, parents, elected officials, service clubs, the community college and high school districts, and businesses.” The list of endorsers, the donors to underwrite the informational mailers for the campaign, and the strength of the volunteer effort to do phone banking and door to door campaigning for two months is, we hope, an inspiration to San Bruno that, together, we can make a difference in our community”, they continued.

The Campaign Committee celebrated with a thank you gathering at Nueve in Bayhill to acknowledge the breadth of support from so many individuals. On hand to share in the accomplishment were San Bruno City Council Members Michael Salazar and Marty Medina, Mayor Rico Medina and former Mayors Jim Ruane and Larry Franzella. Supervisor Dave Pine and Elizabeth McManus, Deputy Superintendent San Mateo Union High School District, who were key volunteers on the campaign, were in attendance along with Dr. Kevin Skelly, superintendent of the high school district. Alumni of the district, parents, and other community leaders were on hand to await the election results.

Next steps include formation of a Citizen’s Oversight Committee, finalizing sale of surplus property to enhance the proceeds from the bond measure, and bringing together stakeholders in the decision making about the modernization design and timeframe to implement it. The District will continue to keep the community informed about progress.
