America’s Safe Schools Week
This week is Youth can bring unique strengths to emergency preparedness. That’s why, in 2012, the Federal Emergency Management Agency created the Youth Preparedness Council to bring together youth leaders from across the country who are engaged in youth preparedness.
So during America’s Safe Schools Week, encourage youth in your community to help create a safer environment by:
- Starting a Youth Preparedness Program;
- Getting involved in a Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT);
- Watching the Teens4Prep videos from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and
- Downloading hazard-specific playbooks from America’s PrepareAthon!to help local schools and the community prepare for emergencies.
Wildfire Prevention
Wildfires can occur anytime, anywhere, even in your back yard. Take action now to protect your property and your family.
- Be informed of potential dangers in your community with this “o Disposing of charcoal briquettes and fireplace ashes properly;
o Never leaving a fire unattended and making sure it is fully extinguished;
o Storing combustible or flammable materials in safe containers away from the house;
o Keeping the gas grill and propane tank at least 15 feet away from any structure; and
o Keeping vehicles parked away from tall, dry grass.
