SamTrans Adopts Fare Policy
At its January 2019 meeting, the SamTrans Board of Directors adopted a fare policy for the first time in the agency’s history. This policy lays out the principles and goals that will shape any future changes to SamTrans’ fare structure.

The goals of the policy center on ridership, cost recovery, customer experience, administration and promotional strategy. This includes more specific goals such as encouraging ridership growth by keeping SamTrans affordable and simple to use, fare changes being transparently and rapidly justified, and allowing the agency to provide incentives to attract particular markets.

The adoption of a fare policy was one of the goals of the SamTrans Strategic Plan. This policy will be used by both SamTrans staff and its Board to guide adjustment of fares in the future.

SamTrans operates 70 routes throughout San Mateo County. Funded in part by a half-cent sales tax, the San Mateo County Transit District also provides administrative support for Caltrain and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. SamTrans has provided bus service to San Mateo County customers since 1976.
