The County’s new overdue fines policy. At the present time the elimination of overdue fines is being implemented by the branches of the San Mateo County Library only.

This means the CITY and community college libraries within the Peninsula Library System will continue to assess overdue fines. City libraries consist of Daly City, South San Francisco, Burlingame, San Mateo City, Redwood City, Menlo Park and San Bruno.

Food for Fines required patrons to donate food in order for their overdue fines to be waived.

The County’s new policy eliminates overdue fines altogether, with no action required on the library patron’s part.

While San Bruno's Food for Fines was successful, it was a temporary program which ended December 31.

As you may know, the San Bruno Library has not charged overdue fines on children’s cards for the past 2.5 years.

In addition, just six weeks ago we introduced automated renewals, which automatically renews checked out library materials before they become overdue. This relieves the library patron of remembering to renew their library materials, thereby eliminating some potential fines.

San Bruno Library staff will be monitoring the impacts of the County Library’s new fines policy.

In the meantime however, we will continue to assess overdue fines on adult cards.
