A long standing partnership between the District and Recology San Bruno supports teachers with their class and school projects related to sustainability, including with preschool students where they have presented assemblies to teach about recycling. Recology San Bruno works with our school student green teams to recycle 46% of generated waste district-wide, diverting it from going to landfill by recycling paper, plastic, metals and glass, and by composting organic materials through Recology San Bruno’s organics program which is then turned into a rich soil amendment used by farmers and landscapers. This partnership has resulted in San Bruno Park School District and our individual schools receiving honors in the area of sustainability and protecting the environment including from Sustainable San Mateo County, the only school district in the County to be so recognized in 2017. Recology also supports activities for staff with generous donations of classroom supplies and gift baskets.

San Bruno Rotary Club is always there for the District, be it painting a fence at the District Office, supporting Children’s Day, Teachers Cash for Class, or annually honoring a special teacher with a monetary award. One of Rotary’s most valued support systems for San Bruno youth is the Interact Club which is flourishing on the Capuchino campus and growing at Portola Elementary School. Organized by dedicated Rotarian Josie McHale, Interact is available to students ages 12-18 who want to join together to tackle the issues in their community that they care most about. Working closely Ms. McHale and other San Bruno Rotarians, the students are visible helping at numerous city and District activities. Recently they collaborated with AYSO and Junior Giants to collect uniforms and sports equipment to send to students in Mexico and Central America.

SAN BRUNO LIONS CLUB – Tom Fernandez

For decades, San Bruno Lions Club has worked behind the scenes to enrich the lives of San Bruno Park School District students. The annual Posy Parade gives our schools the opportunity to come together around a theme to build floats, participate in poster contest, and walk together in the parade. Most recently, Lion Dr. Stephen Kelly has worked with the schools on the event. The Lions Club supports Childrens' Day, and Teachers Cash for Class. Each year in December, they bring Santa Claus and elves to our students with special needs and assemble hundreds of holiday food bags to enhance the holidays for those less fortunate. One of their most significant contributions is that, under the leadership of Lion Mel Phillips, they offer free vision screening to every student in the district, including pre-school. If a vision issue is discovered in one of our students from a low income family Dr. Stephen Kelly provides in office free eye consultation and the Lions Club covers the cost of the eye glasses.
