Article Source: Erin Vega, Troop 61999

Erin Vega is the one who started the Troop and brought everyone together.

It all started with a simple wish. A simple wish that would snowball into something something larger than her and I.

How do you join?

So many question, too easily found with a few simple clicks in the Girl Scout website. We quickly realized there was no openings in any troops in our area. But we did not let that discourage us for digging some more.

Our amazing school Liberians , who has been a Troop leader for a long time, was able to guide us in a direction on how to start our own troop!! With the help of a small group text to some school friends, we got the wheels turning. There where some very ecstatic parents who where happy to help take lead and other parents who were happy to help as needed, and 12 excited 2nd graders ready to be Brownies! (Brownies are the name given to Troops of the younger age group, they’re still a part of the Girl Scouts Of America).

Girl lead, girl run is the Girl Scout way.

Leaders (parents) help facilitate ideas, and the thoughts the girls have. The girls lead the meetings, they choose which activities and/or trips they plan to take. All while learning different ways to explore their world all around. The girls are continuously learning, and have made great strides in communicating with each other, working together, planning, and understanding what it means to be a part of this group or team.

The Troop is comprised of 2nd grade girls from John Muir Elementary.

As the girls gear up for cookie sales, we practice how to handle money, communicate with a customer, establish eye contact, and instill confidence in themselves. In selling cookies, the girls are not only learning life skills and helping raise money for future activities and experiences, but will be donating a portion of the proceeds to victims of the Camp Fire, in Paradise, CA.

The girls will be selling cookies for the next three weeks and have two more table setups for you to grab your boxes.

Monday - Jan. 28 - CVS @ Bayhill - sold 177 boxes - first time ever selling cookies (original goal was 50 boxes for the night)

Sunday - Feb. 3 - Lunardi’s Supermarket San Bruno - 12pm to 3pm

Sunday - Feb. 10 - Milbrae Pancake House - 11am to 1:30pm

Cash and credit cards accepted.

As for meetings and new members, the leaders haven’t discussed that plan in detail yet. The plan is to get the girls going for at least 6 months (they started at the end of 2018), see where it goes, then gauge for the 1 year mark on new and renewing membership/participation. I am sure we will reach out with new info when the time comes about adding in more girls to the Troop.
