2018-2019 Community Grants Fund Awards Announced

For the 2018-2019 cycle, the San Bruno Community Foundation is awarding Community Grants totaling $300,000 to local organizations for 25 projects that benefit the San Bruno community. The Foundation is pleased to partner on the Community Grants Fund with YouTube and Google.org, which have provided $100,000 of the grant funds being distributed this year.

The Foundation Board approved the grants at its December 5, 2018, Board meeting. “In collaboration with YouTube and Google.org, we are very pleased to invest in the valuable work that local organizations do to strengthen the San Bruno community,” said Foundation President Nancy Kraus. “This year’s Community Grants will support a diverse array of community organizations doing meaningful work to benefit the people of San Bruno, including Ombudsman Services of San Mateo County’s advocacy and education efforts on behalf of San Bruno residents of long-term care facilities, My Digital TAT2’s promotion of healthy online habits and behavior among San Bruno elementary school students, and the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County’s work to provide legal assistance to residents facing eviction.”

“YouTube and Google.org are proud to work with the San Bruno Community Foundation on a variety of initiatives including the Community Grants Fund, helping to invest in innovative and valuable programs that benefit San Bruno, YouTube’s home,” said Rebecca Prozan, Google’s head of Public Affairs in California. “Through the Community Grants Fund, we are grateful for the opportunity to support so many organizations dedicated to making a difference in the lives of San Bruno’s children, parents, caregivers, teachers, ethnic communities, and those struggling to make ends meet or facing other economic and personal challenges.”

Representatives of many of the grantees - including Judy Puccini of the Capuchino High School Alumni Association, accompanied by Capuchino Principal Jesse Boise, pictured above - attended the Board meeting and thanked the Board for offering the grant program and for its consideration in the selection process.

Foundation Board Recognizes Outgoing President Nancy Kraus

On December 5, the SBCF Board thanked outgoing President Nancy Kraus for her exemplary and devoted leadership of the Foundation over the past five years. As President, Nancy helped guide the Foundation from its formation in 2013 following the City's settlement with PG&E after the devastating 2010 gas pipeline explosion in the Crestmoor neighborhood to its current status as a vibrant, forward-looking, and transparent organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for all in San Bruno. After five years as President, Ms. Kraus will remain on the Foundation Board as a Board Member.

December Board Meeting Summary

The Board of Directors of the San Bruno Community Foundation held its regular monthly meeting on December 5, 2018, at the San Bruno Senior Center. In addition to approving the Community Grants Fund awards and recognizing outgoing President Kraus, the Board received various reports, including:

Report on Recreation and Aquatics Center Project: On behalf of the Ad Hoc Committee on Recreation and Aquatics Center Project, President Kraus reported that the Foundation disbursed to the City of San Bruno the final payment of $34,608.85 for the strategic grant covering the conceptual design phase of the project. She reported that the City is finalizing its contract with Group 4 Architecture for services related to the schematic design/construction documents and construction phases of the project and that the Foundation and the City will soon finalize the grant agreement for architectural design services for the project. She also reported that the City is in the process of selecting a project management firm to assist with the project, which will likely be covered in a third strategic grant to be considered by the Board in the first quarter of 2019. All of these grants come under the umbrella of the $50 million the Board has committed to the City for design and construction of a new recreation and aquatics center for San Bruno.

Report on Community Day: Executive Director Leslie Hatamiya reported that the City requested a $30,000 grant from the Foundation and its assistance in securing additional sponsorships from community partners to support Community Day 2019, which is scheduled to be held on Sunday, June 2, 2019. She reported that in discussions with City staff, she, President Kraus, and Vice President Hedley have stressed the need for the City to take on more of the responsibility of funding the event, referencing the Board's decision to fund the event for the first time in 2016 with a $30,000 grant, with the intention of scaling back its support over time as the City ramped up its ability to secure sponsorships from other partners. Acknowledging that both the City Manager and the City's Community Services Director recently assumed their roles and are committed to increasing the City's role in developing other funding sources for the event in future years, the Board approved a grant of up to $30,000 to the City in support of Community Day and authorized staff to receive donations earmarked for the event from community partners.

Report on Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship: Consultant Stephanie Rutgers announced that the 2019 Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship is set to launch the week of December 10, when the online application will be accessible and updated marketing materials will be distributed to local schools and throughout the community. The application deadline is March 6, 2019. No significant changes have been made to the program this cycle, and staff will continue to improve outreach efforts to attract applicants.

Report from the Investment Committee: Investment Committee Chair Tim Ross reported that the Committee held its quarterly meeting on November 27, 2018. He summarized the report the Committee received from Sand Hill Global Advisors LLC (SHGA), the Foundation's investment adviser, and noted recent market volatility. Upon a recommendation from the Investment Committee, the Board adopted a resolution authorizing the Executive Director to execute a new professional services agreement with SHGA, to take effect when the current agreement expires in March 2019. Mr. Ross said that the Investment Committee and Foundation Board have been very pleased with SHGA's management of the Foundation’s investment portfolio and its responsive service to the Foundation.

Finally, the Board canceled its regular meetings in January and February and scheduled a special meeting on February 6, 2019.
