Santi is among almost a third of children living with Cerebral Palsy and who experience challenges walking independently and participating in demanding physical activities. But 13-year-old Santi doesn't let CP slow him down. He’s been inspiring all of us through his determination to lead a normal, physical life.
For the last five years, Santi has been an active member of Junior Giants, a flagship program for the Giants Community Fund. It’s a free, noncompetitive, co-ed baseball program that also teachers character development. Santi also plays trumpet in school and performs in a local mariachi band. He’s also a mentor and leader in his exercise group.
As a student, Santi is stellar - and a leader in class. One of Santi's teachers reported that Santiago comes to class with a robust smile and often a hug, and that joy and enthusiasm carry over into class, where he consistently works with focus, attention, respect, and good humor. He performs well on quizzes and writing assignments, and is especially remembered for his speeches, which he delivers with poise and command of the room.
Santi was recently awarded the Harmon and Sue Burns scholarship, in honor of the late Giants owners, which will help pay his college tuition after high school graduation.
Schools with Tomorrow Inside Update
As a key phase in the District’s vision to create 21st century teaching and learning centers, the Board voted (4-1) to sell the El Crystal school property, which officially closed in June with students and teachers now part of the John Muir and Allen Elementary School campuses. The vision for larger, centralized and modern campuses capable of providing teachers with more collaborative opportunity and students with access to enhanced programming, will also support operational efficiency and reduce facilities maintenance costs. The district has placed a general obligation tax measure on November 2018 ballot which helps to move forward the vision for schools that support high quality 21st century teaching, learning and student safety.
Fiscal Health of the District Overview
Since the Board’s adoption of a Fiscal Recovery Plan in early 2017, recommended by the Budget Advisory Committee (comprised of District and community representatives), the District realized in the 2017-2018 year a positive fund balance. The District presented the 2017-18 unaudited actuals on at the Board meeting, which reflected an increase to the unrestricted fund balance of $162,421 compared to the estimated actuals. This reflects a continued positive status for the District.
Transferring to becoming a Basic Aid district, we have moved out of negative certification and are building a healthy reserve to prepare the District for future economic uncertainties. Administration has acted prudently to strengthen the District’s fiscal health, implementing new systems of monitoring every expenditure to ensure each is aligned with the District’s mission and vision which are reflected in LCAP goals and which support the District’s Strategic Plan, designed by district and community stakeholders.
Successful Salary Negotiations with Teachers
Following a salary increase in 2017-18 of 1.5%, the District recently concluded successful negotiations with the teachers resulting in a 3% increase in salary for 2018-19 and another 2% in 2019-20. Our Strategic Plan goal to attract and retain highly qualified teachers and staff is ever present in all conversations related to moving the District forward including providing them with safe and modern working conditions.
Attendance Matters
For the last trimester of the 2017-2018 school year, John Muir received recognition for best attendance and Parkside for most improved attendance. Each school received a banner to display outside the school. All schools have Attendance Matters banners on display, reminding students and parents that attendance matters every day, in every way, to students being successful in school.
