SAN MATEO – Sean Orr netted a pair of free thrws with 3:15 remaining in overtime to give Cañada College a 99-98 lead en route to a fanciful 108-102 comeback upset of second place Las Positas College in Friday’s night’s Coast North Conference men’s basketball finale.
COLTS ON 5-GAME STREAK: Cañada (21-7 overall, 8-4 Coast North) finished with a 5-game win streak, a game behind second place LPC (21-6, 9-3) in the final league standings. Defending state champion and state top-ranked City College of San Francisco (27-1, 12-0) repeated as conference champion and was the only team to beat the Colts in the second half of Coast play. Las Positas had beaten visiting Cañada, 97-83, in first round play. Skyline College (11-17, 5-7) finished a game back of Cañada, in fourth place.
--State/regional playoffs being this weekend, with the Colts expecting to open on the road.
Down by 19 at the half (45-26) against LPC, Cañada scored a phenomenal 82 points after the break!
The hosts Colts, playing at the College of San Mateo gym, overcame a 4-point, 87-83, deficit with under two minutes left in regulation to tie it on a steal and layup by Noah Conner. Another steal and fast break by Jumikal Williams-Choa gave Cañada a brief lead, 89-87, with 1:09 to go. But it was far from over. A dunk by Michael Hayes put Las Positas ahead, 90-89 with 26 seconds left. The Colts responded with a 3-pointer by Conner for a 92-90 advantage with 13 seconds to play. The Hawks missed their first attempt to tie it but got a putback with a half second left to send it to overtime knotted at 92.
A jumper by Hayes gave Las Positas the initial lead in the extra period, which featured four ties and five lead changes, before the Colts finally held onto an advantage. The charity baskets by Orr started an 8-point Colts run from which the state No. 14 ranked visitors (21-6) could not recover.
3-COLTS COMBINE FOR 84 POINTS: Josh Blueford led Cañada with 32 points, including five 3’s, scoring 21 after the break. Kaden Bradley had 30 points, 25 in the extended second half -- plus seven rebounds and three assists. Orr finished with 22, after netting only a single 2-point basket in the first half. Vinny Ferrari led the Colts with five assists.
SKYLINE DROPS FINALE AT FOOTHILL: Skyline got off to a 34-28 halftime lead in its final game, at Foothill, but the host Owls came back to score a narrow, 68-64 victory. Masie Mohammadi led three Trojans in double figures with 18 points and had three assists. Noah Haynesworth scored 14 points, while Isaac Loera had 12 points and seven rebounds.
