ALL 4 COUNTY CC BASKETBALL TEAMS BEGIN 2019 WITH PRELEAGUE WINS; COAST NORTH PLAY STARTS WED.
All four San Mateo County community college basketball teams opened 2019 with weekend victories in final crossover games before Wednesday’s official beginning of Coast Conference division play.
The Cañada men became the third winningest team in Northern California at 13-3 with a 71-70 triumph over West Valley, hosting the Vikings at College of San Mateo’s gym. Skyline (6-10) beat visiting San Jose City College, 94-59.
The Skyline women (11-5) capped the home doubleheader, beating Mission, 70-66. San Mateo (5-7) topped the Gavilan women’s team, 72-63, in the lone road game.
WEDNESDAY (Jan. 9) Coast North openers:
The Cañada men will be the only team opening league play in San Mateo County on Wednesday, hosting Chabot (7-9) at CSM at 7 p.m. Both Skyline teams open at conference favorites City College of San Francisco. The game with the state No. 7 CCSF women (10-2) is at 5 p.m. and with the No. 2 defending state champion men (15-2) at 7 p.m.
The CSM women play at Ohlone (0-11) in Fremont at 7 p.m.
WEEKEND SHOWDOWNS:
It will rivalry Friday, with the CSM women visiting Skyline in San Bruno at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s game features an early league showdown with Cañada going to reigning CCCAA champ CCSF at 7 p.m.
RANKINGS:
--The Cañada men are No. 15 in the state and No. 6 in Northern California. CCSF is No. 1 in the north but dropped a spot to No. 2 in the state after a 77-73 loss to Coast South member Cabrillo last month – which ended a 43-game winning streak. CCSF has lost only a half dozen times in its last 110 outings over four seasons.
--The Skyline women began the year ranked No. 13 in Northern California. Two other Coast North teams are highly ranked: No. 4 CCSF and No. 8 Chabot (11-6).

WILEY LEADS CSM OVER GAVILAN, 72-63, IN PRE-LEAGUE FINALE
Kyana Wiley had 16 points, seven rebounds, and three assists to lead College of San Mateo’s women’s basketball team to victory in its first 2019 game, 72-63 at Gavilan College Friday night.
Kaitlyn Tamondong and Megan Jajeh added 12 points apiece, each with a pair of 3’s, in the Coast Conference crossover contest.
CSM (5-7) opens Coast North Conference play at Ohlone (0-11) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Fremont; then plays at Skyline (11-5) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs do not have a home game until Jan. 16 when they host league favorite and state No. 7 ranked City College of San Francisco (10-2) at 5 p.m. Gavilan, which plays in the Coast South, completed non-league play at 3-9.
