Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Announcement

The San Mateo County History Museum, home of the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame, announces it has created a new format for the induction ceremony for local sports stars. Since its creation in 1989, this was a dinner affair.

In 2019 the format will change.

For the first time, the ceremony will take place within the History Museum with a hosted reception in its upper rotunda and the program itself within the Museum’s historic “Courtroom A.” The event will take place on Thursday evening April 25.

The Master of Ceremonies will be KNBR-Radio baseball talk-show host Marty Lurie. Peninsula sports journalist and historian John Horgan will introduce the inductees, who will be given an opportunity to address the audience.

The awardees are:

Nicole Carroll/ College of San Mateo
A world-class javelin thrower who starred at CSM and Fresno State, she was a two-time American champion and a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.

Pat Lewis/ Mills, Oceana, Jefferson High
An excellent track and field coach for 50 years on the Peninsula, he specialized in tutoring male and female athletes in throwing events (shot put and discus).

Gino Della Libera/ San Mateo High
A football and track and field standout, he took his considerable skills to Arizona State University where he was an integral part of an undefeated 1957 Sun Devil football team.

Eric Reveno/ Menlo School
A basketball state champion at Menlo School, he later played at Stanford and became the head coach at Portland University, earning West Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors.

Tod Spieker/ Menlo-Atherton High
An outstanding swimmer at Menlo-Atherton and UCLA, and later in masters’ age-group competition, he has had a major impact on aquatics locally and nationally.

John Ward/Carlmont High
A past member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, he has created and maintained a comprehensive website that charts the long history of Northern California semi-pro/amateur baseball.

The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the program to start at 6:15.

The cost is $35 per person in advance, $40 at the door.

Those buying two tickets will be given a one-year membership in the San Mateo County Historical Association (valued at $50). Proceeds will benefit the maintenance and upgrading of the Sports Hall of Fame exhibits.

The San Mateo County History Museum is located at 2200 Broadway within the 109-year-old “Old Courthouse” in Redwood City. It features exhibits related to the use of natural resources, suburban development, ethnic experience and entrepreneurial achievement on the Peninsula from the time of the Ohlone Indian through today. The Museum is open every day except Monday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
