Construction Begins on New County Center Building in Redwood City
Tree removal and building demolition at 555 Marshall St. and 500 County Center in Redwood City began this week, making way for a new County office building that will improve the public’s experience by offering a one-stop-shop for County services and provide a more efficient and pleasant experience for visitors and employees alike to County Center. During construction, metered street parking and parking on the ground level of the County Center garage will be available. Working hours for this project are Monday through Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding Redwood City observed holidays. All demolition activities will occur in accordance with the encroachment permit issued by Redwood City. LEARN MORE

Organics-to-Energy Pilot Program Aims to Reduce Waste Bound for Landfills and Produce Clean Energy
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors at is June 4, 2019, meeting approved funding $1 million to a new pilot program that has the potential to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfills by converting organics into a clean energy source. The County's Office of Sustainability is set to collaborate with RethinkWaste on the Organics-to-Energy pilot that will use an Organics Extrusion Press (OREX) to extract 50-75 tons of organics per day from the waste stream that would otherwise go to landfills or composting facilities. San Mateo County Parks Expands Dog Pilot Program to Junipero Serra Park and Coyote Point Recreation Area
San Mateo County Parks expanded the Dog Pilot Program to include on-leash dog walking at Junipero Serra Park in San Bruno and additional areas at Coyote Point in San Mateo beginning Saturday, June 15, 2019. The community is invited to bring their dogs to a kick-of event Friday, June 14, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Junipero Serra Park to meet park staff and become familiar with the park and areas where dogs can be walked. Informational cards that detail rules about visiting with dogs will be available, as will items that foster responsible dog walking, including a waste bag holder, bandanas and leashes. The pilot program is being developed by the Dog Work Group, which is working to identify potential park locations where on-leash dog access can be piloted and evaluated in keeping with San Mateo County’s newly revised dog ordinance that was approved fall 2018. Human Services Agency Helps Seniors Sign Up for Food Benefits Via New CalFresh Mobile Office
The CalFresh Mobile Office hit the road again this past week, this time visiting the Martin Luther King Center in San Mateo. Visitors applied for CalFresh benefits and Second Harvest Food Bank provided food to seniors from the area. Thanks to changes in the law, seniors in California who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)/State Supplemental Payment (SSP) benefits are now also able to apply for CalFresh food benefits, reducing hunger and poverty among our seniors. The Human Services Agency launched the CalFresh mobile office this past spring to bring CalFresh outreach and enrollment to the community. LEARN MORE
