Affordable housing for veterans on the way in North County

Dear Friends,
San Mateo County has taken great strides in recent years to combat the housing crisis by making historic investments in affordable housing projects with Measure K through the Department of Housing and our nonprofit partners. I’m proud to announce that the waiting list for Colma Veterans Village Section 8 project-based voucher program (PBV) opens Monday March 4 and runs through March 31. The Veterans Village is a 66-unit affordable housing community in Colma on Mission Road between Cypress Lawn and Holy Cross cemeteries. All veterans, regardless of discharge status, may apply for the seven PBV units available.

Preference will be given to county residents, homeless, those who lack Veterans Affairs benefits due to discharge status and who are ineligible for HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Vouchers. The project is being developed by Mercy Housing, a local leader in building affordable housing projects in the Bay Area.

The seven PBV units available are fully equipped one-bedrooms with a maximum household size of three individuals. The village will have a community garden, dog park and landscaped courtyards. Income limits for the units range from about $51,000 to $66,000 depending on family size.

Veterans residing at the village will also have access to community activities, case management, health and wellness and financial education services.

To apply for the seven PBV units online go to www.mysmchousing.com. Application assistance is available at the Housing Authority, 264 Harbor Blvd., #A, Belmont; Daly City Community Center, 350 90th St., Daly City; and the Pacifica Resource Center, 1809 Palmetto Ave., Pacifica.

The temporary leasing office for Colma Veterans Village is located at 1001 Bayhill Drive, second floor, in San Bruno.

This is an exciting opportunity for veterans who have served our nation in uniform and an incredible example of how the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has taken great strides to add affordable housing units at a time they are so critically needed.

District 5 Together cultural event highlights Census 2020
Our third annual District 5 Together culture and resource fair will resume this year at Jefferson High School Saturday, March 30. The last two events have been phenomenal, attracting thousands of residents to gather for a day of fun, food, music and more. This year, we are showcasing some of the greatest “old school” DJs from the late 1980s and ‘90s combined with a younger crop of DJs who are currently emerging in north San Mateo County for entertainment.

It will also be a platform to promote the county’s effort related to Census 2020. We need to ensure that every resident in the county is counted, young and old, so that we secure the federal dollars needed to provide critical health care, public safety and food assistance to those most in need. The fair will also feature about 50 resource tables from various organizations, county departments and nonprofits to educate the public on various services they may be eligible for. The fair will also feature Irish dancers, a youth orchestra and food prepared by various Jefferson High School clubs. The event is free to the public and is an incredibly family-friendly event. County adopts strict gun storage law that will save lives
The Board of Supervisors unanimously passed an ordinance I co-sponsored that requires firearms in homes must be stored in a locked container or is disabled with a trigger lock. In the past 10 years, there have been 800 gun-related deaths in San Mateo County and many of these deaths could have been prevented if the firearms were locked safely in the home.

Among children, 89 percent of unintentional shooting deaths occur in the home and most of these deaths occur when children are playing with a loaded firearm in their parents’ absence. This law will help protect children from accidental gun deaths and undoubtedly decrease the risk that a gun will be used to commit suicide, homicide or cause injury.

This law will surely save lives, I have no doubt about it and I was proud to co-sponsor this ordinance with Supervisor Dave Pine that the board approved Feb. 12.

Social host ordinance to protect children from drugs, booze
The Board of Supervisors unanimously passed an ordinance that I co-sponsored in February that prohibits loud or unruly gatherings where alcohol, cannabis and other controlled substances are ingested by or in the possession of minors. The social host ordinance became law after the Health and Wellness Committee of the San Mateo County Youth Commission spent months studying the issue under the guidance of my office and Supervisor Carole Groom’s office, who also co-sponsored the ordinance.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, 72 percent of youth who drink alcohol are able to get it from family and friends. Cannabis may be legalized for recreational use in California but minors are strictly forbidden to use it except for medical reasons. Data shows 57 percent of youth access cannabis through family or friends.
This was an initiative I helped to spearhead while serving on the Daly City Council years ago. It came to be after some youth in Pacifica died in a tragic car crash after attending a house party. Kudos to Pacifica Councilwoman Mary Bier who assisted both Pacifica and Daly City to pass similar ordinances years ago. The Youth Commission also suggested the ordinance will include restorative justice elements that would provide individuals with opportunities to learn from their experiences, restore their standing in the community and avoid further offenses. The ordinance will serve as a model for the county’s 20 cities to pursue in the future.

Lincoln Park Community Center gets major upgrade
I was proud to contribute more than $80,000 in Measure K district-specific funds to replace the floor at Lincoln Park Community Center. The old floor was aging and needed to be replaced desperately. The center has a history as rich and colorful as Daly City itself. Over the course of 65 years, it gradually evolved from a tiny neighborhood playground to one of the city’s premier recreation centers.

The center serves the Crocker neighborhood and is consistently bustling. It is one of the sites in Daly City that also provides the Senior Congregate Lunch Program. Last year, 9,657 lunches were served at the center. It also serves as a distribution center for the Second Harvest Produce Mobile which serves 300 families from the neighborhood each month.

The new floor is more durable than the old one and should serve the community for many years to come including events such as the Chinese Moon Festival, Black History Month, Lunar New Year, Cinco de Mayo and of course Filipino Independence Day.
