In recognition of her exemplary service to San Bruno Park School District and to the community-at-large, the San Bruno Community Foundation honored Superintendent Dr. Stella Kemp at the Foundation Board meeting on June 5. Dr. Kemp was recently selected from a nationwide search to lead the Santa Clara Unified School District, effective July 1.

The Proclamation recognized Dr. Kemp’s vision, leadership and outreach to community partners to support educational transformation in SBPSD. The Foundation has funded nearly one million dollars for program improvement in the district, most recently a $250,000 grant awarded to San Bruno Education Foundation to support two projects central to the San Bruno Park School District’s current efforts to transform its schools into “Schools with Tomorrow Inside” – the Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL) Program at Belle Air and Allen Elementary Schools and the Parkside Middle School Accelerating Student Learning Through Systems Transformation.

The SEAL program update highlights that kindergarten and first grade (K-1) teachers participating in the program have finished their first year of training. The district has hired a second coach to begin working at Allen Elementary School next year. K-1 teachers have also finished their planning for the Summer Bridge component of the program. The district is at full capacity for three sections of rising K and rising first grade students for the Summer Bridge program, which will begin on June 18. Second and third grade teachers from Allen and Belle Air will soon attend their SEAL launch training along with their principals and the second coach. An English Language Acquisition assessment was completed in March, and although it is early in the district’s SEAL implementation, it is anticipating considerable growth for K-1 students.

At Parkside, the partnership with Partners in School Innovation is at the completion of its final Results Oriented Cycle of Inquiry (ROCI). PSI will soon complete an assessment of school systems and instruction using the School Transformation Rubric (STR). This assessment involves gathering data from a variety of sources including interviews of teachers, staff, and students. This assessment was also completed at the end of the 2018 school year, and the result of the current year assessment will allow staff to ascertain growth based on the work conducted in 2019.

In addition to grants awarded during the Foundation’s Community Grants cycle that also benefit students in SBPSD, are the following strategic initiatives to help move the District forward:

Pedestrian Safety: Over $200,000 combined with grant from Google/YouTube to install flashing beacons at crosswalks providing access to Portola, John Muir, and Parkside schools.

Music Education Strategic Initiative: $495,000 to San Bruno Education and Capuchino Alumni Association to support enhancements in music education for San Bruno children, including providing music for every student K-5th grade in SBPSD. The initiative was recently recognized as the winner of the "Partnerships in Schools" award from the Association of California School Administrators Region 5 (covering school districts in San Mateo and San Francisco counties).
