The law allows counties, like the County of San Mateo, to work with public utilities on enrolling residents in the emergency notification system via customer contact information. The goal is greater participation in SMC Alert so that residents can stay informed in the case of a natural disaster or emergency.

If the County and the utilities do reach an agreement, implementation could still be months away so the County encourages residents to proactively sign up for and customize their emergency notifications at www.SMCAlert.info.
