State Awards San Bruno $90K Traffic Safety Grant
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant will help police carry out a variety of traffic safety initiatives.
SAN BRUNO, CA — California Office of Traffic Safety has awarded the San Bruno Police Department a $90,000 grant for various traffic education efforts.
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant will help police carry out a variety of traffic safety initiatives.
The funding will go towards patrols with emphasis on alcohol and drug-impaired driving prevention; on awareness and education of California's hands-free cell phone law; with emphasis on education of traffic rights for bicyclists and pedestrians; with emphasis on awareness and education of primary causes of crashes (excess speed, failure to yield, failure to stop at stop signs/signals, improper turning/lane changes).

“These are trying times, and now more than ever, it is important that we are at the forefront of traffic safety,” Police Chief Ryan Johansen said in a statement.
“This funding allows us to educate and enhance the safety of all residents.”

The grant, police said, also will help enable community education presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, DUI, speed and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
The San Bruno Police Department also received a separate $6,250 Traffic Records Improvement Project grant from the state OTS to streamline processes to collect and report traffic data.
“Accurate and timely data is critical to the safety of our roads,” Johansen said.
“This funding will help paint a clearer picture of our biggest traffic safety issues.”
