State of the County Address Highlights Biggest Challenges to the Peninsula
To a crowd of more than 225 San Mateo County residents and stakeholders on Oct. 24, 2018, Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine delivered the State of the County address. Set to a multimedia presentation, Pine touched on some of the greatest challenges the region faces from housing and transit to water and energy. He also highlighted what the County of San Mateo is doing to ensure the region continues to be a great place to live, work and play for everyone. The presentation was recorded live. VIEW HERE
Board of Supervisors Appoint New San Mateo County Poet Laureate
At its Oct. 23, 2018 meeting, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors appointed Aileen Cassinetto of San Mateo to the honorary post of Poet Laureate. Cassinetto will serve as the third and first Asian-American Poet Laureate of San Mateo County. Her two-year term will commence January 2019. The Board of Supervisors created the honorary post of Poet Laureate in April 2013 to elevate poetry among San Mateo County residents and to celebrate the literary arts by making poetry more accessible to people in their everyday lives. San Mateo County Law Enforcement Officer Honored for Exceptional Service to Domestic Violence Survivors
Corporal Rebecca Dabney of the South San Francisco Police Department was honored this week by the Board of Supervisors with the 2018 Barbara Hammerman Award for her continuous and persistent advocacy and leadership combating intimate partner violence. Dabney has distinguished herself by providing exemplary service and devout dedication to victims of intimate partner violence and their children, including best practices on interviewing children involved in intimate partner violence cases. Charitable Contributions Campaign Offers County Employees Opportunity to Support Local Charities
County of San Mateo employees participated in the County Manager's Office's annual Charitable Contributions Campaign, an opportunity to give back to the community through one-time or regular payroll deduction contributions made to charitable groups working on health, human services and environmental concerns. Employees within the workplace plan, organize and carry out the drive, which includes a Halloween theme with pumpkin carving and pie baking contests. Since 2004, the campaign has raised more than $1.4 million. LEARN MORE

San Mateo County Health Recognizes 'Housing Heroes'
Two San Mateo County organizations—the Change Agent Housing Committee and Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS, a division of San Mateo County Health)—recently honored at the 11th Annual Housing Heroes Award Ceremony local leaders who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in providing or maintaining housing for individuals with mental health and/or substances use issues in San Mateo County. Housing-related challenges in San Mateo County are especially acute for people who are low-income, or who have mental health and/or substance use challenges. LEARN MORE
