This Sunday, April 14 at 6:30pm, OpenRoad with Doug McConnell will air on NBC Bay Area and will focus the entire episode on the arrival of the first people of European heritage to the Bay Area and their profoundly consequential encounter with native Ohlone people along the San Mateo coast and by the shore of the Bay. The San Mateo County Parks Foundation is proud to be one of the underwriters for this episode.
We’ll follow the route of the first Europeans to lay eyes on San Francisco Bay 250 years ago this November. We’ll see where a struggling Spanish expedition under the command of Gaspar de Portolá found sustenance and support from native Ohlone people who guided them safely from village to village up the San Mateo coast to modern-day Pacifica. We’ll climb a high ridge between Pacifica and San Bruno where the Bay was first spotted by the Portolá expedition and descend through stately oaks to its final destination by a famous redwood tree that gave the city of Palo Alto its name. We’ll learn about the ancient and sophisticated ways of the Ohlone who welcomed these first visitors but were devastated and nearly eradicated by waves of immigration that soon followed and stayed. Watch a preview on Facebook here.

Ohlone Culture Lives
This will be a significant year for us to remember and reflect on one of the most important and poignant moments in California history which foreshadowed a dramatic and swift transition from ancient ways to modern times. On our journey, we’ll follow Portolá's path which is in process of being developed as the 90-mile Ohlone-Portolá Heritage Trail, half of which is already accessible to the public on existing trails across protected parks and open spaces.
