Skyline College awarded $50,000 for Promise Scholars Program
Dear Friends,
Find out what's happening in San Brunofor free with the latest updates from Patch.
I was proud to award Skyline College $50,000 is district-specific Measure K funds to support its Promise Scholars Program. Promise provides incoming full-time students with comprehensive support including a full scholarship for one year, academic support, dedicated counseling and career and professional development for up to 700 students. I am incredibly impressed by the fact that 64.4 percent of individuals enrolled in the pilot program last year were first-generation college students with many residing in District 5.
This can be an incredible life-changing experience for those seeking a higher education. Students receive $1,875 on average in direct resources in the first year of program enrollment. The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved my request to award the program $50,000 from my office’s Measure K district-specific budget at its March 26 meeting. Last year, my office granted the program $5,000 and upped it to $50,000 based on student success. The goal is to greatly expand the county’s support of the program as it continues to prove its benefits to the community. Click here to learn more about the program.
San Mateo County boosts the safe disposal of sharps
The safe disposal of sharps saves our children, saves our environment and saves our wildlife from harm. It’s a simple, cost-effective tool that keeps our community safe. But too many of these items end up in the garbage, where they can do great harm and spread infectious disease. Safely dispose of sharps waste at a drop-off location in a sealed, puncture proof container. Find a list of the county’s 14 drop-off locations at smchealth.org/sharps. Looking to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medicine?
California state law Section 118286 of the California Health and Safety Code makes it illegal to dispose of sharps waste in the trash or recycling bins and requires that all sharps waste be transported to a collection center in an approved sharps container. This includes hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin, for the delivery of medications. There are over 50 disposal locations in San Mateo County. Find one near you at smchealth.org/rxdisposal. This is a great effort by our Environmental Health Division that will go a long way toward keeping our community healthy and safe.
$10,000 Measure K grants support Pacific Islands Together, Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center
I was proud to award two grants of $10,000 each in district-specific Measure K funds to Pacific Islanders Together (P.I.T.) and the Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center (PBRC) last month. The grant for P.I.T. is to support its Shine! Family Day, a community health and wellness event. P.I.T.’s main goal is to value diversity in arts and culture while enjoying good health and engaging in wellness. Shine! Family Day is May 18 this year and will feature a rugby and volleyball tournament from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jefferson High School in Daly City. Click here to learn more about Pacific Islands Together.
Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center has been an institution in Daly City since 1989 and is led by chairman of the board Perla G. Ibarrientos and board member Ray Satorre among many others. The center is a gathering place to build and empower the Filipino community through free legal help clinics, youth development and leadership programs and tobacco prevention projects. The PBRC grant will fund educational workshops focused on health and wellness. Click here to learn more about the PBRC.
District 5 Together honors north San Mateo County’s Citizens of the Year, showcases county’s Census 2020 effort
Our third annual District 5 Together culture and resource fair at Jefferson High School Saturday, March 30 was a smashing success. It was a phenomenal event that attracted thousands of residents to gather for a day of fun, food, music and more and was a platform to promote the county’s effort related to Census 2020.
We need to ensure that every resident in the county is counted, young and old, so that we secure the federal dollars needed to provide critical health care, public safety and food assistance to those most in need. The Census 2020 theme is “Everyone Counts.” Special thanks to Mitzy de la Pena Medina with the Office of Community Affairs for giving a presentation on the census.
The fair also featured about 50 resource tables from various organizations, county departments and nonprofits to educate the public on various services they may be eligible for. The fair also featured the Whelan Academy of Irish Dance, the youth orchestra Harmony Project and food prepared by various Jefferson High School clubs.
This year, we showcased some of the greatest “old school” DJs from the late 1980s and ‘90s combined with a younger crop of DJs who are currently emerging in north San Mateo County for entertainment, an idea put forward by Daly City Councilwoman Juslyn Manalo. On hand were Keith Okada, Nate Nevado, Rapper Versoul, DJ Don Don, DJ Bite Size, DJ Apollo and DJ Shortkut.
Our office also honored our citizens of the year in District 5 and other individuals who have made an impact on north San Mateo County. They included Brisbane Citizen of the Year Ariel Cherbowsky; Broadmoor Citizen of the Year Isabel Gutierrez; Colma Citizen of the Year Rae Gonzalez, Daly City Citizen of the Year Angella Logarta; San Bruno Citizen of the Year Mayor Rico Medina; and South San Francisco Citizen of the Year Marife Viola. Our Champions of the Year were the entire Jefferson Union High School District Board of Directors Carla Ng-Garrett, Andrew Lie, Nick Occhipinti, Kalimah Salahuddin, Rosie Tejada and Superintendent Terry Ann Deloria.
Special awards were given to Assemblyman Phil Ting for being the Innovator of the Year and state Sen. Scott Wiener for being north San Mateo County’s Hero of the Year for his bold and courageous legislation.
We also honored the business of the year Republic Services, with executive Mike Mahoney accepting.
