Faces of SSMC
Ever wonder who the people behind SSMC are? In this new section, going forward, we will introduce our key SSMC champions. Go SSMC team!
Introducing Nick Heinzen, our Fundraising co-Chair extraordinaire!Nick's vision of sustainability is "a culture that values our environment and actively strives to do more to integrate our lives with nature and the Earth".
Below, find out more about Nick and why he decided to get involved with SSMC.
- What moved you to join SSMC? I learned about SSMC through a friend in the Redwood City community and the thing that really caught my attention was SSMC's mission to build awareness within San Mateo County about living in a sustainable way. The incredible work that the team of caring community members does inspired me to reach out and see how I could get involved.
- What excites you about SSMC? I think what's most exciting about SSMC is it's potential to make real, lasting change in our community. In reading the organization's cornerstone annually published Indicators Report, I can pull out ways that I personally can change my behavior to live a healthier, more socially conscious lifestyle.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself : As a transplant from the Midwest, I've found my way to the Bay Area like so many others because of it's incredible draw, vibrant communities, and growing opportunity for professional and personal development. My day job supports private philanthropy for another important cause close to my heart, advancing research in human health, and in my spare time I'm continuing my education, singing in a community choir, and volunteering with great organizations like SSMC.
- About how to implement sustainable behavior in our busy everyday life? Many people think implementing sustainability in your life means you have to sacrifice, but it is really just looking at how you are using resources. A mantra I think of is to strive to "reduce, reuse, recycle, revive" when I can. Also remembering that big changes come from small changes. Seriously! We can all start making small changes that will add up to make bigger changes!
- Biggest opportunity(ies) for San Mateo in terms of becoming more sustainable? Transportation! Everyone in the Bay Area knows that transportation is a challenge, but we live in a place that has amazing weather most of the year. Let's get out of our cars, and bike and walk more. It's better for our mind, body, and environment. I love my public transit commute and being able to be more connected with the vibe of the day.
- A book recommendation on the topic of sustainability? Drawdown, by Paul Hawken
Thank you, Nick, for sharing your thoughts and wisdom with the broader SSMC community! To finish, let me share one of Nick's favorite quote (one of mine's too!) around sustainability:
"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children" - Native American Proverb
San Mateo Residents's Big Ideas on "How to make San Mateo County more sustainable"
Throughout the last few months, SSMC reached out to San Mateo County residents and asked them about what can be done to accelerate sustainability throughout our County.
Feedback from the public included: Carpooling; Public transportation; Native plants; No/less plastics and Styrofoam; Solar panels; more EVs; Using less water...
Have a suggestion? email it to: advocate@sustainablesanmateocounty.org with "Sustainable SM County" in the subject line.
Looking for opportunities to get involved? Join us!
SSMC depends upon its many committees to fulfill its mission. We welcomes your ideas and input on ways we can make San Mateo County a true role model for sustainability throughout the region and beyond! Inspired by Nick's example? Reach out and contact us at: advocate@sustainablesanmateo.org to learn more about our organization and ways you can become actively involved in one of our committees or as a volunteer.
