Rep Speier Blasts Contradictory EPA Declaration on Redwood City Salt Ponds, Publishes Previously Undisclosed Region 9 Report

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) spoke on the House Floor today in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) jurisdictional determination that the Redwood City Salt Ponds do not include “waters of the United States” under the Clean Water Act (CWA), a complete contradiction of the Region 9 draft declaration issued in 2016. Rep. Speier read portions of the Region 9 report, which the EPA never released to the public, into the congressional record this morning and posted the full declaration on her website.
“It’s clear that the Trump Administration hijacked the jurisdictional process from local experts on the ground – putting politics ahead of science – because the 2016 determination didn’t suit the Administration's agenda,” Rep. Speier said. “The EPA Region 9 determination clearly stated that 1,270 acres within the subject area are ‘waters of the United States’ under the CWA. Yet the final determination by Administrator Wheeler completely contradicts the previous findings by local experts. I refuse to stand by as the President and his lackeys work to further undermine our environmental protections and the health and stability of our natural resources for the benefit of special interests. That is why I read the key findings of the previously undisclosed Region 9 declaration into the congressional record this morning, and I have published the complete 2016 draft declaration on my website.”
